What to do when the head crashes into the bed?

A few questions:

  1. How bad is it if the module crashes into the bed? In my case the 10W laser crashed into one of the corners of the bed and pressed it down more than I was comfortable with.

  2. What, if anything, should you do to ensure that you recover from a crash? I’m wondering about how it could impact the linear modules and the bed (should they be reseated and reset somehow?). Are there ways to measure the bed to make sure it’s not bent? Running calibration seems like an obvious thing to do but other than that I’m not really sure how far I should go with worrying about it.

  3. Has anyone noticed common reasons why the heads would crash? All I did was controlled the module from my computer and clicked “Go to work origin”.

  1. Remove the bed and place it in a know flat surface. Measure corner to corner to ensure it’s square.

  2. Well, you should NEVER go to work origin unless you’ve SET ORIGIN first. You don’t know what was previously stored as the origin (could be anything). I’ve had CNC but collide doing a bounds check (win those useless supplied clamps). Just snapped the bit.

Interesting. I assumed that a work origin was set automatically when you start a job. This could have been the issue then. This was the very first job on this machine. All of the calibrations prior to the job ran fine though. Thanks for the tips.

3D printing seems to have the origin at the center. But laser and CNC I’ve never been able to make any assumptions about the origin that Luban uses. It always asks. And also seems dependent on whether you start the job from Luban or on the SM itself. CNC I always manually set the origin, and for laser I always set to lower left.

I crashed my 10W head twice exactly as you described. This happened after I had just set the work origin. I did notice that I went into the machine settings and I’m not sure if something in the Luban software caused the problem. I am going to try to re-create the sequence except for the actual crashing to see what action caused the problem. I’m also having problem with the camera calibration finishing and the add background function isn’t available. The best way to verify the table is to dial indicate the surface while moving the XY.
