U1 spool holder alternatives

I’m pretty sure the first thing I do with my U1 will be to replace those A1 style spool holders. I hated them on the AMS Lite and I’m sure I’ll hate them on the U1. Does anyone know of any good files that are already available out on the webs that I can print ahead of time?

I doubt. We still do not know how holder fits into the body. So we will have to wait for that.

As for the design, any traditional spool holder design will do, as the feeders only move filament in one direction compared to AMS lite which needed to pull the filament back too.

Once the U1s are distributed, the first 100 or so prints from everyone will be Mod parts for the machine.

Isn’t that true for every machine? 8 of my first 10 prints were mods.

I am buying a new machine so that I can make mods for it. I ran out of ideas for my current machine.

Snapmaker said in an update, based on feedback, they’re already looking at printable spool adapter models, possibly to be installed on the firmware. So you may be able to just push print after a future update.

That would be awesome, and def my first print.

From my experience, adapters are a real pain! You need a different kind of adapter for different rolls. At least, I haven’t found a universal adapter. Even if you do, you’ll have to remove it for rolls that fit perfectly on the spool holder, like Snapmaker’s own filament. Not to mention smaller 250gram rolls wont even fit at all.

The best solution would be to design a new spool holder that is thin but strong enough to fit all.

Yeah. IMHO, the best spool holder is just a ~40-50mm peg maybe with some slip tape to reduce friction if needed.

Clean. Simple. Works.

I’m planning to use the SnapDryer Boxes I bought for my 2.0. I will try to put the boxes on a shelf under the printer and relocate the auto-feeders to the rear and just below the printer. The spool holder arrangement has always seemed sub-optimal since it about doubles the horizontal shelf width needed when you consider room to change spools.

Oh, I dunno. Work spaces vary so much, I don’t think there was a way to make everybody happy.

I have mine just sitting on a 22" square table. For me I kinda like it, cuz I don’t wanna put stuff above it, can’t really put things below it, and just side mounting the spools works fine cuz there’s room on either side of the table for easy spool access.

Some people wanna put dryers behind it which seems strange to me, but okay. Others are talking about drilling out holes in benches to run filament from below.

I’m sure we’ll see a lot of creative solutions!
