Snapmaker Artisan brand new metal pei sheet tore - refurbish or defect?

Tried my brand-new sheet-metal plate with a PETG and it tore off right away.

I expect the PETG was too adhered too strongly, but want to be sure it doesn’t look like a defect. I’m very surprised it tore so easily, I guess I was expecting it to be directly applied prepared surface, not glued. The glass plate was, and held up exceptionally well.

If I can refurbish it, can I print (with PETG for now) directly on the plain metal and get a good adhesion, or should I attach a new (thicker!!!) PEI sheet?

From searches, it appears heating and scraping is the only way to peel it off, followed by removing the adhesive the usual way.

With my previous printer, I had a glass bed, and PETG stuck so well to that, that removing the print tore tiny shards from the glass! Since then, I use painter’s tape with PETG every time, with any print surface.
