When ordering filament (in my case PLA 1.75), I normally want one of the following:
1 or more 1kg spools of black, white and/or gray
OR
Multiple 250g spools of basic colors (red, blue, green, purple, orange, yellow, etc.) as a bundle
The problem is that I am yet to find the latter that does not include a bunch of extra strange or special types of filament (silk, transparent, multiple spools of similar but not equivelant shades or types of the same color). Therefore, I often end up several kg of filament that I never wanted and am unlikely to use. I do not think it should be hard to get a set of basic colors (just like buying a box of crayons). When people buy things like 64 packs of crayons or colored pencils, many of them never get used. The same is happening to me with filament. Does anybody know of any good places to get bundles of ONLY the basic colors without all the extra silk, transparent & unmatched colors?
I think you missed some of the significance of my statement. The link you give, for example, is all 1.1kg spools, none of which include all the colors I mention. Not only that, but many of them are NOT basic (silk, for example). That would mean multiple purchases of colors I don’t want & large amounts of colors for which I only need small amounts. Many of my models are primarily a color like black, white or gray (as implied in my original post), and the details are colors. For example, a game board would have lots of black/white/gray (whichever the case may be), but the pieces (the colored filament) would use very little. Large spools of color are great for scenarios where you simply want an object to be a certain color instead of black/white/gray, but most color-oriented objects use small amounts of color because it is being used for the details.
I don’t like to buy 1kg spools that I know I won’t finish. But the 250g and 500g spools are pretty much the same price, so I just buy 1kg and keep them in some desiccant when they’re not mounted.
I usually end up using about 600g before they’re so brittle that they’re annoying to use.
Thanks! I’d say that’s pretty much exactly what I want! I guess they just make it hard to find some things hoping to sell all the specialized things like high-speed & silk and getting us to buy the larger spools, but I think you have cured (or at least minimized) my filament search frustration! Thanks!
FWIW, I’ve had really good experience with the GST3D PLA+ from fremover.net. $10/KG, and at 205C nozzle with 50C bed I’ve had really consistent rresults.
