Discussion of Snapmaker 2.0 Firmware Updates

My point is not that I am asking for firmware, equipment warranties, etc.

I am addressing the fact that when new firmware or Luban software is released, there are often completely different and different problems or unexpected bugs.

We are simply saying that while we are comfortable using a new version because it is easier to use, has more features, and has improved bugs, we need to be careful because sometimes different problems can arise.

I may not have explained it well when translated into English.

Blockmodule you are preaching the gospel to me. Snapmaker shouldn’t be using us as test dummies while acting like they know what they are doing.

They could look at Microsoft for inspiration and have a dedicated ā€œbetaā€ channel for members to optionally adopt the bugginess to enjoy new features.

I agree with @MooseJuice and @Blockmodule. It’s very obvious to me that Snapmaker as company and its leadership don’t care about their customer one bit. They do of course care about their revenue. That’s why they handle issue in a ā€œfriendly wayā€. I don’t think it will work in the long run when competitors arrive in their segment and Snapmaker has already ran their reputation into the ground, the end might be inevitable. I knew all about Snapmaker before buying my J1 and all my fears and concerns have been verified. Only reason I took the gamble was that it started on kickstarter without any affiliation to Snapmaker, so I was already aiming for it when Snapmaker became involved. It’s pretty absurd really what they can get away with. Only a company with no competitors in their segment could get away with the unproffesionalism, amateurism and low quality products they provide…

It is well known that dissatisfied users (like, ahem, us) are more vocal than those who happily use the product and never feel the need to post on a forum. There are also plenty of people on here who are happy with their Snapmakers, and post instead about what they can accomplish with it.

Makes me wonder if there is just a high number of (expensive) lemons, but greater than half of the SM machines are actually super awesome? And if that were the case, why wouldn’t SM make things right by replacing the lemons with good machines instead of limping through part-swap after part-swap?

So maybe the non-lemons are the rare ones, or maybe the satisfied users have environments which come close to the laboratory conditions under which the products are designed and tested. I fully admit that the environment in which my A350 runs would be considered a battlezone by any product tester :grin:

Its kind of of like the lemons could have been fine. But the gardener is a drunken bastard so he doesnt care about watering the lemontrees. He might piss on them once in a while while drunk… It might not be a big deal if you don’t mind taking care of the products yourself and making them work. Or maybe those people have never eaten a orange for example so they have nothing to compare it to…

I downloaded and installed firmware version V1.16.5.bin and it worked pretty well with the 3D printer module. I see the new features like choose quick connect, which I ordered and arrives in Oct, so that’s good.
When I went to use the laser module it notified me that on older version of firmware installed so I tan the installer again. Now, there is a bug or something because I cannot get the laser module to auto focus. I follow the steps and when it goes to etch the lines on the 1.5 mm board, the modules never came back to surface and tried to burn from a height of 3.5 inches, the laser was way out of focus, a wide, white laser light on the surface from 3.5 inches and it left no marks.

Solved it for me.

I downloaded and installed the firmware latest Version: Snapmaker2_V1.16.5. This resolved the bug that disconnected the SM 2.0 A350 from Luban every time you tried to connect. You had to go into AppData>Roaming> and delete the snapmaker-luban folder. Then when you start Luban again it connects (only once). The firmware upgrade seemed to fix that.

NOW the NEW problem - I switched to the Laser head, it then said firmware out of date so I upgraded to Snapmaker2_V1.16.5. Now it will not auto focus when you calibrate. I follow the correct steps, 1. enter material thickness, 2. I measure the height using calibration card. Then the head raises in Z approximately 50mm, and it says set work origin. I hit ā€œwork originā€ without moving the head, 3. It says autofocus and hit proceed, and it proceeds to burn the lines but at that distance. Obviously the beam is like a flashlight and doesn’t burn anything.
To work around this bug, I manually set the work origin at approximately 3.5mm but I’m not sure I am getting the best results.
How do i get the autofocus working again and/or how do I manually focus the laser. Thanks

Hi, I report that in version 1.16.7 the enclosure is not recognized in A150.

I just updated my Snapmaker 2.0 A350 (Dual Extruder) to V1.16.7 and I’m having problems with calibration that I haven’t seen mentioned here.

Prior to the upgrade I’d been having a new problem for a couple of weeks that it would lose calibration every time the machine was powered off. That was a pain, especially because I use a glass bed that prevents auto-calibration. I hoped the 1.16.7 update would fix that (ha ha).

Instead, three new things are wrong:

  1. Manual calibration starts at the home position for Z instead of within 2-3mm of the bed. Moving the head 0.5mm at a time a distance of over 300mm was really tedious.
  2. Choosing 4x4 manual calibration did a 3x3 instead, only doing 9 points, then it would not proceed to complete the calibration, or do anything else. I had to power off.
  3. I removed the glass bed, replaced the print sheet, and tried to do an automatic calibration—and it got to the fine-calibration part of the first calibration point before stopping with ā€œPlease shut down the machine and check if you’ve attached the toolhead through the correct screw holes as instructed in the Quick Start Guide.ā€ (I had; I printed successfully on the glass bed with the same toolhead a few days ago).

Without being able to calibrate the machine it’s dead in the water. Tomorrow I’ll try rolling back to a previous firmware version to see if I can get it running again. Has anybody seen anything like this?

This may sound incredible but the software was right and I was using the wrong set of holes on the dual extruder module

Attaching the dual extrusion head in its correct holes, doing a full auto calibration on the stock print sheet, then replacing the glass bed and doing a manual leveling resolved all of the above issues.

I had the same issue, on V1.16.5. That was very serious problem as you know, I had support ticket at end of July and report that, but I updated to V1.16.7, The problem solved.

Did you use before V1.16.5 and updated directly to 16.7 ? If you have, I reccomend that install V1.16.5 at first, after that, install V1.16.7 via WiFi update.

So here’s a question. I recently updated to V1.16.7 and printed a couple of things after installing the Quick Change kit. I knew after doing those mods that I’d need to recalibrate everything simply due to the number of changes I’d made all at the same time.

This morning I downloaded the freshly released V1.17.17 bin file and put it on the thumb drive to do the update.

But before I do…is it the general consensus (since I can’t find this written anywhere else) that I will need to re-do the calibration all over again just because I updated the firmware?

I’ve just run the V1.17.17 update and it stopped in the middle of the process with a dialog box saying something about Fab screen or something, and did I want to quit or wait? So I said to wait and the update completed successfully after about a minute.

Depends what calibrations you are talking about… some are stored between firmware flashing. Some don’t survive the tool change.
