X axis making a Snapping sound

I have the A350 with enclosure. I was successfully doing a lot of laser cutting experiments, switched to the 3d print head to do a long project for a friend (lots of trial and error). Before I switched back to the laser, Luban updated and the firmware did as well. I am new at this and not sure how much is user error and how much is machine/sofware error.

When the toolhead moves along the x axis it makes a cracking/snapping sound, almost like the metal piece that covers the front has warped. On a project I just engraved, some of my lines look really wobbly too. Should I try to take my X axis apart? Or file a ticket?

That’s definitely not right. I would assume you’ve got a bad rail (or two).
Is there play in the x-axis?
If you try to tilt it back to front or left to right is it tight or does it rock?
I’d email SM support with all the info and your photos and get a warranty claim started.
Let them tell you to take it apart.

It maybe moves just a little if I try to tilt it back to front? This is such rotten timing… I’m in the middle of a project. -_- Thanks for the reply, I’ve submitted a help ticket via the Support page. Wish me luck~!

I struggled with this thing for like 13 hours today on a complex project that I have already printed successfully ONCE, and I could not figure out why it kept messing up. argh! headdesk

You can share your g-code in case it’s something weird happening.
I doubt that will matter, but it’s worth taking a look at.
You can use ncviewer.com to check it out too.

In order to make sure the material is not bent, you can use a wood board to try again.

As for the cracking sound, you can try to tighten the steel strip with the adjuster we offered.

Here is a video for your reference:

Actually it was a piece of wood where I first noticed the wiggly lines! This leaf was oriented horizontally for the print in order to fit on the wood properly. You can actually see various line wobbling, particularly on the cut edges where I made two passes to cut through the 1.5mm plywood.

Thank you so much for the video, I’m going to try that a little later today.

The wobbling lines may be caused by the software. If you select Vector mode, the lines might be deformed slightly.

Please keep me updated about the linear module’s performance.

I tried the strip tightening tool today. I did it twice, just in case I messed up. Unfortunately, my unit is still making the snapping sound. Here are videos I took:

Test two after tightening a second time:

I was advised by tech support also to use the strip tightening tool. I’m starting to wonder if I am going to have to take it apart. :weary:

Just wanted to let you know that tech support is submitting an order for a replacement!

It’s nice to know I wasn’t just doing something wrong with calibration. Once I have the new one installed I’ll probably take this one apart to look at its guts! It’s good to know how things work or potentially how to fix it.

Edit: I also did a camera calibration, and you can see here that the x axis line is wobbly again. so I’m fairly certain it is a mechanical failure and not the g-code.

I’m positive it’s a mechanical failure, what with the snapping. Something inside the rail is snagging, releasing, snagging again, and releasing. I haven’t actually seen what the inside of the rail looks like other than pictures of the different pieces. I haven’t seen how it’s rigged up so I haven’t any idea. I know what’s in there but again don’t know how it’s oriented.

Well! Potter let me know that they are sending me a new x axis… it came very quickly actually… just a few days! … unfortunately it’s the wrong part :sob:

@Edwin honestly how does that one get screwed up?

Sorry for the great inconvenience. It is Potter’s personal fault. I have forwarded this issue to him and will send the correct part to @OctopusRoyalty this week.

Edwin

Thank you @Edwin ! My guess is my order got crossed with someone else’s somehow. Honestly I was amazed by how fast it got here. I hope the second part comes as fast. I’m actually in the middle of a project for a client!

My colleague replied to you today and please confirm if you received the reply email.

I did get an email from Nicole! I am awaiting a tracking number. Thank you for looking into this
