Strange first layer

Hi

Not sure what is happening here (only first layer test print) Using Cura with eSun ABS+

Initial temp: 240
Bed : 90
Initial layer: 0.28
Initial layer width : 150%

Printed in the image orientation. The top part looks pretty much ok, but the part closest to the camera (also closer to the middle of the plate) looks like it is too close to the plate somehow? Can’t be over extruding and can’t be that the bed is uneven as at this stage the head is moving left to right.

Even when the direction changed (in the test print) the top part was om, closest to the camera still wasn’t.

Any ideas of what could be wrong would be appreciated!! :frowning:

Like so many, you are suffering from the non-flat bed that many SM2’s have. There are many threads about this (among them:

If your machine is new, maybe support will replace the grid platform…

Yeah, that’s a pretty classic “too close to the bed” print. The head is so close that extruding squishes out, and pushes the previous pass up off the bed.

If you’re having trouble, a raft is designed to deal with an uneven bed. It intentionally prints in such a way leaving room for the over and under extrusion of an uneven bed to average out. It’s not a great answer; @Hauke’s answer is better, but it’s also a process.

Once you get a good level and a good calibration, you can probably dial back that initial layer width. I print 100%.

Thank you for the responses. Unfortunately mine isn’t “new” just the first time I’m trying to print a large object.

After struggling with the base moving up and down and had to adjust and tighten the bearings … I did not yet again expect something else.

After I posted I read the guides and realized what the problem probably is (should have read there first, but didn’t think it could be leveling - or I guess I hoped it wasn’t)

It is just sad that at such a price point you would expect that some basics just “work”. It is just painful :frowning:

I’ll try some the guids / suggestions to level it … but I need to work up the strength to even try it. Just not feeling it at the moment :frowning:

Thanks

Your print’s also visibly warped in the worst area, although it’s hard to tell whether that’s cause, effect, or just because ABS is such a pain to work with. Extra adhesion (brims and such) may help with that a bit.
