Print Fails After First Few Layers (3% - 8%)

Just bought snapmaker 2.0 A350 and every time I try to 3D print anything it fails after the first few layers (no error message and right between 3% and 8% into the print) and everything returns to the home position and both the bed and nozzle heat is turned off. This has happened 5 out of the 6 times I have printed and the home screen becomes frozen and I only have the option to ‘pause’ or ‘cancel’ the print which none of them work and I have to power down the printer.

  • I am using PLA

  • Nozzel temp set to 210

  • Bed Temp set to 60

  • Using Luban to slice my model and sending it VIA wifi and then printing directly from the printer by disconnecting the wifi

  • Using Luban Version 4.0.1

  • Using Snapmaker version Snapmaker2_V1.13.1_20210720

The only time I got a successful print is when I did the factory rest to the printer and the first print attempt right after that worked like a charm! Thought I had fixed it but, my next two printing attempts errored the same way again. I am hoping I don’t have to factory reset every single time I want to 3d print something but, if anyone can shine some light on this or if they have experienced this before and knows how to fix it and is willing to share the solution it would be greatly appreciated! If there is any other useful information I did not provide that can help pin point the issue please let me know!

Thanks so much in advance.

Have your problems been with the same model (STL file) every time, or with different models?

The first two fails was the same STL file after the factory reboot that same file worked just fine. And then I went to move on to my second print (new STL file) and the same error occurred.

If your prints are complex, try something really, really simple, like a calibration cube.

That being said, I’m not entirely clear on what you mean when you say “prints fail”. Do you mean your A350 just stops printing? That sounds like a firmware or hardware problem. Did you upgrade the firmware at any point? And in the category of The Bleeding Obvious, are all the cables firmly seated at both ends?

I have tried the cube as right before I did my factory reboot with and got the same failure as my more “complex” print. Once I did the factory reboot I went right to my more “complex” print and that finished no issues. However, my next 2 attempts were both failures.

When I say “print fails” i specifically mean it stops printing and returns everything to the home position (Z,X, and Y) and turns off the heating for the nozzle and bed. The screen also locks up and I only have an option to pause or cancel the print but, the buttons are non-responsive and I have to reboot to be able to do anything using the touch screen. In my original messaged I indicated I have everything up dated to the latest versions (pasted below for convenience) so I am not sure if there are known bugs in the versions I listed below or not (just got the printer).

  • Using Luban Version 4.0.1
  • Using Snapmaker version Snapmaker2_V1.13.1_20210720

And yes, I have checked and pushed the cables in as far as they will go! I hope that helps clear things up! At this point I am willing to try just about anything! So, thanks for responding.

Okay, that is Not Normal. You may have a faulty controller. Contact support@snapmaker.com . Since your machine is brand new, they should be willing to replace the parts under warranty.

I agree with @ElloryJaye, this isn’t normal even for glitchy firmware that they release every other time. I’m putting my chips on bad controller.

Well good news! I found the issue and have resolved it! Thanks to both Ellory and Artezio for your responses and suggestions!

After two factory reboots, updating snapmaker to the latest version via USB not WiFi, and updating Luban to the latest version I was still getting the same error/failure where my print would stop printing at about 3% - 8% of the print and the X,Y, and Z would all go to the home position and the nozzle and bed would both turn off aka no heat to either of them.

Before I replaced anything the awesome support team suggested I try changing my nozzle and when I went to change it I noticed one of the inner wires where the heat wrap is located was completely disconnected.

Luckily the printer comes with two replacements and swapping the nozzle out is really simple and I have successfully now printed 5 3D prints and all were successes!

Bad model. Hot end could be defective (bad thermocouple). Try a different slicer like cura (has profiles and there’s a plug-in to send the file direct to the printer).

Hey Mads… yes it was a bad hot end a wire was not connected I took an actual picture of it because the manufacturer wanted one. The only thing is the bare metal had the heat shrink on it but, when I pulled it out of the trash it fell off.

So to be clear I pulled the hot end off the bare wire had the heat shrinking material on it but, was not connected where the break in the wire is. I swapped it out and I have had no issues.

Woof. I just had one fail on me too. It would last a 1-15 minutes and turn the machine off.

Good news is you can get them on Amazon for 8 bucks. I ordered another 5.

I think I will stock up on them as well and I am glad It’s easy to replace them. How long did yours last out of curiosity? Not sure what a realistic life expectancy is for one.

It really depends. The first couple lasted quite awhile. The last one was brand new; I think it just had a bad thermocouple.
