Is it advisable to run the power supply with out the cooling fan? I plan to hang my supply below a custom made table and thought about removing the internals just to sit in a cradle with out the fan to remove its noise!
Not sure I get it - “Removing the internals” means you want to run the PSU without the housing?
In general, inside the Snapmaker housing sits a Meanwell PSU module (Something more or less like this one: Mean Well SP-320-24 AC-DC Enclosed Power Supply : Amazon.de: Computer & Accessories) - this has its own fan. You can run it without the Snapmaker housing, but that would leave the terminals exposed, increasing the risk of electrocuting yourself. If you protect this properly and know what you do, that would be OK IMHO, as long as the fan of the Meanwell PSU gets enough air.
Personally I would not have a power supply in use that is not covered or protected. Here it’s 24v or 240v if you touch it.
I personally would not run it without cooling. Heat kills electronics. Even if the PSU is not overheating it will still die more quickly than without a fan.
If your worried about the noise, maybe try mounting the case with neoprene or rubber pads to dampen the sounds.
I don’t know if there where changes but I could confirm the original psu Fans where really loud.
Have a look here, there are many alternative fans:
Only open it if you know what you do and don’t forget to unplug!
