Luban Settings Rotary Modul_straight groove V bit VS Flat en mill 1mm

Hi Everyone,

I purchased the Rotary Module and tested it with the Lion from Snapmaker. For the test, I opened the Lion on Luban — there was already a toolpath, so I just clicked ‘Generate G-Code’. The result was actually pretty good. However, afterwards, when I looked at the settings, I noticed that the setting for the tool was the flat end mill 1 mm, but I used the straight groove V bit for the job. If I change the tool to a straight V bit in Luban and generate the G-code, the processing time is 57 hours, but if I choose the flat end mill, it’s only two and a half hours. As I want to do other things now, I am not sure which tool to choose: with the straight groove, everything takes a long time. Why did the job with the straight groove bit take so long, and how could the job have been so good when I had the wrong tool in the setting?

Hi Anne,

the V-bit has only a tiny working tip, so it cannot remove very much material in one go. The 1mm flat end mill can remove way more material in one go, so it is much faster. However, the 1mm flat end mill is unable to produce the details the finer bit can do. The typical approach in CNC milling is to do a “roughing path” with a coarse bit (like the 1mm flat end mill) to remove much material fast, and then do a “finishing path” with the V-bit for getting the details. Sometimes you even do more pathes for clean surfaces etc.

If you want to do advanced stuff, you’ll need to invest into a 4 axis capable CAM software. Unfortunately, these typically are really expensive…
