If A350 goes through print motions when no filament loaded does this mean my filament out detector is broken?

When i moved my A350 into my enclosure i forgot to reload filament (i was tired). I was very confused when i sent print job and it printed nothing for the first layer. Quickly realized my mistake.

However i thought the A350 detected filament out? Is this right and if so does this mean my detector is faulty?

Very likely, it sounds like it’s non functional.

M119 over USB will show you if the sensor is triggered. When you insert and remove filament you should hear a click and then M119's output will show you the change in state.

If that’s not working you may be able to slightly bend the microswitch’s lever arm to make contact, or you may find it’s jammed on something.

It is possible (but not likely) to have a small piece of filament inside the head that’s been stripped by the gears (so it won’t feed through) and is just long enough to prevent the sensor from tripping. Unless you found a piece of broken-off filament, this isn’t likely to be the case, though.

This is subsequently more likely with the older head. It also might just be gummed up or slightly deformed somehow. It’s also possible nothing physical is interfering with it and it just flat out went bad. It’s also possible that something happened that happened to me when I was tired and unloaded it for the day. I went back the next morning to discover a piece of filament 2 inches long broke off when I unloaded and it still read it as loaded. Needless to say I was wondering wtf when I tried to load it and it wouldn’t go in. Saw it and told myself “if it was a snake it woulda bit me”

In my case, it was my last attempted use of the packed-in black Snapmaker filament, which had gotten pretty brittle by then. Looked over to the machine after an hour or so and discovered it had been air-printing for a while with a teeny little black nub sticking out of the head. I switched filaments when I tried again the next day.

The head arrived plugged with blue filament, I couldn’t load the first few time I tried until it got hot enough and the load action was enough to push the blue out. Can I see the micro switch from outside? I am not keen on opening the housing in see that invalidates warranty?

@scyto wait… the head came “brand new” with filament already plugged inside the head?

@WilliamBosacker i must’ve misunderstood, I thought he meant it was blobbed already. Yeah every printer I own had a random color pushed out before the provided filament finally comes through.

Yes that’s what I assumed, test filament, glad they did that, was no biggie.

Will check why my unit didn’t notice filament out after I had been printing, removed all my filament. Seems good tips.

My filament detection works perfectly.

Just seems that when printing from Luban directly using the Run button (play symbol) the filament status is not checked and the printer does what it is told by Luban
