How to clean this nozzle?

Hi all,

after several prints, my nozzle looks pretty bad…
During the last print at around 80% no filament was extruded anymore…
Ending up in a totally blocked nozzle.
I’ve tried to heat it up and unload / load, manual load filament by pushing through the nozzle and a cold plug. But nothing removed the clog inside of it.
Now I replaced the nozzle with the second one and looking for ways to get the nozzle cleaned.

Any ideas? Recommendations?

Unscrew nozzle and heat ‘break’ from heat block and use a flame torch to heat it up, wipe off filament, push filament through, maybe cold pull several times. Honestly, buying a new one is less time consuming…

The v1 nozzles are in there pretty tight; I sheared a nozzle trying to remove it. I’ve seen reports that it unscrews easier if the block is heated up, but I haven’t personally tried it.

Welders have a tool to clean cutting torches. You can probably use it to clear the inside of the nozzle, although I think it’d be difficult to clear a cold nozzle. The outside of the nozzle doesn’t matter much, as long as the extrusion hole is completely clear, although you might get some smoo on the first layer of your next print.

The bigger question is why you have so much filament on the nozzle itself. I’ve been printing on and off since I got my v1 in 2017, and I’ve never gotten that much smoo on the nozzle. I think the dirtiest it got was when some supports came loose from the bed, and I had a floating ball of spaghetti that was getting pushed around, and some ended up clinging to the nozzle. Your nozzle looks like it was dipped into a piece while hot, repeatedly.

I agree. Nozzles are cheap.

When everything is set right I haven’t had much residue on my nozzles. It’s when I’m dialing in settings or having problems that there gets to be build up.

I wipe my nozzle off with a rag between prints - either when heating up or right after print.

Thanks a lot… I think I will go for a new one

I’m not sure why the nozzle got so much filament on it. It was happening during a print… I checked at around 60%… all was fine… next time I checked it it was at 100% complete, but the print itself seems to just finish until 80%… after that no more filament was coming out it seems. so my guess is the nozzle got blocked because of the filament. short before it was totally blocked, it came out ruffled and sticked to the nozzle itself.
Anyway thanks for the tips. Maybe I will order a small acupuncture needle and give it a try but for now I will order a new one.

thanks

Maybe this Nozzle Cleaner Drill Bits can be helpful , and they are also quite cheap. YOu can also find them in Amazon, just search for ‘Nozzle Cleaner Drill bits’.

Take a brush or steel wool for cleaning while heated, this works for me.

Hi Franky,

Thx.I’ve read several blogs about the drill bits and all recommend not to use the drills because of the possible damage inside the nozzle.

I’ve now installed the replacement nozzle and ordered a new one.
In addition I ordered a acupuncture needle and will give it a try. Will keep you posted.

Thanks a lot @All

I’ve been using this for a while now on my other printers.

All of then have been Boden models so I could take the Boden tube out and manually push that filament through and pull it out. Have tried on this printer yet.
It’s super simple. Crank the nozzle up as high as it will go. This is so that you are well pasty the melting point of your filament, then push this through. It helps clear clogs and also removes residue that’s inside the nozzle.I am assuming that loading once or twice will work, but basically you keep pushing it through until it looks relatively clean, then unload it.
