First time CNC usage - broken bit

Hello All,

So I tried my first cut on a piece of Pine wood I had laying around.
I designed the model in Fusion 360. The first milling operation was a ‘Face’ operation with the Flat End Mill 3.175mm bit. A few seconds into the cut, the bit broke.

Any idea?

Looks like you don’t have “multiple depths” on. It’s trying to cut the whole pass at once. You need to set a step-down and adjust that and your cutting speed to the hardness of the wood and the size of the bit. For that bit and pine you can probably go 1000mm and 1mm step-down. If you want to be really safe, start at 600 and .5. Listen to the machine and bit and you’ll hear if it’s straining too hard.

Thanks. I believe the broken bit is not due to lack of ‘multiple depths’, as the ‘face’ operation simply removes a tiny layer off of the face of the stock.

I double checked everything and it turns out that I misread the label on the bit box, which actually says ‘Double Flute 3.175mm’.

To sum up: operator error :rage: it works perfectly with the right bit.

I’m so bad at this sort of thing I budget in spares for “operator error” and extra parts for small prints because I’m always setting them somewhere and losing them.
