Short Summary
The Snapmaker Air Purifier filter cartridge clogged far faster than specified (1–2 weeks, sometimes 1 day instead of ~3 months), making operation very expensive (~115 € per cartridge).
The root cause is missing coarse pre-filtration. I solved this by adding two reusable pre-filters:
-
A 10 PPI foam filter inside the hose between enclosure and Air Purifier to catch coarse dust.
-
A fine aquarium filter mat placed directly in front of the cartridge inside the purifier.
Both filters are washable and reusable, dramatically extending cartridge life and reducing costs.
To compensate for increased airflow resistance, I always run the enclosure fan.
Result: much longer cartridge lifetime, stable airflow, and massively lower operating costs.
Problem: Extremely Short Filter Cartridge Lifetime
According to Snapmaker, the Air Purifier filter cartridge should last around 3 months.
In my real-world usage, this was nowhere near realistic:
-
Typical lifetime: 1–2 weeks
-
Worst case: 1 day
-
Replacement cost: ~115 € per cartridge
The main reason is obvious:
The cartridge clogs very quickly with coarse dust, soot, and resin/wood particles that should never reach a fine HEPA + carbon filter in the first place.
Root Cause
The Snapmaker Air Purifier has no real coarse pre-filtration.
Everything—large particles and fine particles alike—goes straight into the expensive main cartridge.
This is inefficient, expensive, and unnecessary.
My Solution: Two-Stage Reusable Pre-Filtering
I added two washable pre-filters before the original filter cartridge.
Pre-Filter Stage 1: Coarse Foam Filter (10 PPI)
-
Material: Blue foam filter, 10 PPI
-
Placement:
Inside the connecting hose between the Snapmaker enclosure and the Air Purifier -
Purpose:
-
Captures large particles, chips, and coarse dust
-
Prevents immediate clogging of everything downstream
-
-
Maintenance:
-
I swap or rinse it every few hours
-
Cleanable with warm water + optional dish soap
-
Reusable many times
-
This filter takes the real beating and is intentionally cheap and sacrificial.
Pre-Filter Stage 2: Fine Aquarium Filter Mat (8D structure)
-
Material: Multi-layer aquarium filter mat (8D density)
-
Placement:
Under the inner cover of the Air Purifier, directly in front of the filter cartridge -
Purpose:
-
Captures medium and fine dust
-
Acts as a buffer layer before the expensive cartridge
-
-
Maintenance:
-
Washable with warm water
-
Reusable multiple times
-
This significantly reduces how much contamination ever reaches the cartridge.
Result: Massive Cost Reduction
Since adding these two pre-filters:
-
Filter cartridge lifetime increased dramatically
-
Cartridge no longer clogs within days
-
Operating cost reduced by an order of magnitude
-
Airflow remains stable and predictable
From an engineering perspective, this is simply how filtration systems should be designed.
Airflow Consideration (Important)
Yes, additional filters increase airflow resistance.
To compensate:
-
I always enable the (upgraded) enclosure fan of my Snapmaker A350
-
This reduces load on the Air Purifier fan
-
Prevents excessive stress on the purifier motor
So far:
-
No overheating
-
No abnormal noise
-
No airflow issues

These are examples—any similar filter foam with known PPI/density will work.
Conclusion
The Snapmaker Air Purifier works, but without proper pre-filtration it is unnecessarily expensive to operate.
Adding:
-
a coarse washable pre-filter
-
and a fine reusable buffer filter
is:
-
technically sound
-
cheap
-
reversible
-
and highly effective
This modification paid for itself after the first avoided cartridge replacement.
Hopefully this helps other users avoid burning money on filter cartridges that are doing the wrong job.
