Best way to do 3-color printing

I have a model I want to print using 3 different filaments. It’s designed so that the lower part of the model is in one filament (black TPU), the middle in another (white PETG, which bonds very well to TPU), and the top in another (black PETG). I want to use PETG on the top to get cleaner results than I can with TPU. The issue is with changing out one of the filaments for the last portion. What’s the best way to do that with the dual extrusion module?

A filament change in between is always challenging, because you will have trouble in retracting the old and pushing the new filament into the module without stopping the print.

An option would be cutting the not used filament off right above where it is feeded into the extruder and once the feed starts from this extruder push the new filament into it.
For this you will need to remove the tube which goes to the extruder through the cabinet and feed the filament directly

Or you wait for the filament runout sensor and push the new filament through. I’ve never tested it and do not know what will happen if the filament runs off.

Not sure if this is interesting for you, but @xchrisd seems to have first successes with the 3D Chameleon: 3d Chameleon - up to 4 color/material printing with Single Extruder
