Setting up laser with no z axis to print on large material

I have seen pictures of re-configuring snapmaker 1 to enable printing on larger material.
The hardware set up seems pretty straight forward. Remove all servo modules mount two in parallel to an over head frame at the so you can mount third module to the two modules so you have two y axis modules and 1 x
mount the laser on the x. Make the frame movable or the work piece and use one of those two methods to focus.
So my question is two fold:

  1. Will this configuration work with with the latest firmware?
  2. How do I enable the software to allow me now to print larger than 125mm square?
