Is there any reason not to just put the laser on and engrave something while leaving the CNC bed in place? Seems like the only issue is that the calibration will be off, but I can just re-calibrate to fix that, right?
No. I do it all the time.
My spoil board is 4.1mm thicker than laser bed. So I just add that to my material thickness number for auto-focus.
