Filament color fade

I’ve got some parts that I want to print in red PLA, but I’m worried the red will fade.
Is there any data out there on the color stability of various filaments?

As long as prints are not subjected to direct sunlight, or UV light, the color should not change. Only ASA has UV resistance, but it comes in very few colors, and its color will change over time as well, but it will take much longer for sunlight to change it.

Also, filaments like PLA and PETG will degrade slowly while exposed to sunlight, which is something that need to consider with different types of filament. If the print is not exposed to sunlight, UV, or the elements, then the print and its color should last a very long time.

If it’s a dyed filament, the likelihood of fading is high. If it’s an organic-pigmented filament, likewise. If it’s an inorganic-pigmented filament, it’s likely to be colorfast. You’ll have to talk to the manufacturer of the filament to find out the details. I would not rely on vendor hearsay for this information.

Last resort: paint it, even if that isn’t as convenient. Good paint won’t fade (and may offer a little protection from other forms of degradation).

I may just do that. I’m having good success printing with ABS now, but there’s some surface issues that would solve nicely with a coat of paint. Krylon fusion may be just what the Dr ordered.
