Extend usb c cable of touchscreen

Hi everybody,
i need an usb extender for the touchscreen.

I bought an simple extension cable, but it won’t work. In an other topic here is shown that the terminal is the problem. The extension cables have a shorter terminal than the touch screens one.

Can anybody provide a link for a extension cable which has a fitting terminal?

Thx

Should just be a standard usb-c cable.
This is what I’m using:

i tried standard cables, none worked. comparing the terminals, the snapmaker terminal is 1 mm longer that the terminal of the standard cable
see the image. right side snapmaker touch screen cable, left side standard usb

A quick Google suggests the minimum exposed length of the USB C connector is is 6.51mm. The Snapmaker one on my machine is 7.8mm. Thats not an issue as long as the socket fully connects with a 6.51mm exposed connector.
When my touch screen connector is plugged in part of the exposed connector stays exposed, It doesn’t go fully home. I think this is a bit of loose specification/quality control and that some controller sockets are not as close to the case as others and need the longer exposed connector. In my view if the USB socket is not USB C compliant thats a support issue. Sorry this probably doesn’t help other than to confirm you are not wrong!

Not all cables are equal. Plus could be USB 3 or 4 / Thunderbolt 3 or 4.

Does Snapmaker actually say it’s USB C? They could actually just be using that connector with their own proprietary protocol.

I’ve heard various reports of usb c extension cables not working. Make sure you get a well known and reputable brand of extension cable, the ones that don’t work typically end up being the cheap knock offs. Also make sure it’s not an active cable, where it only works as output and not input and vice versa

@snapUser yes they have verified it’s a usb c, but it has a proprietary pcb that was made special for Snapmaker.

Have you tried both sides, back to back?

There is no chance to try “both” sides. Its a extender, with a male and a female connector.
The standard terminals can’t plugged in “completely”, so the connection to the touch is not able to connect with the controller. Power connect is established, but the controller connection coud not be established. I tried it serval times, with two different brand extenders.

The only way to success was: Manipulating the plugs plastic arround the terminal, earning 1mm more terminal. It works now. Not very beautiful, but a workaround, awaiting an extender which will fit without manipulating.

It seems that the translation was not good.

Have you tried with the USB-C cable connector 180 degrees the other way around?

Not both ends of the cable.

My USB-C male/female extension cable doesn’t recognize the controller if the connector is facing away from it.
I’m not sure why, but…

@WilliamBosacker theres also the fact that it’s a specialized pcb in the connector made specifically for Snapmaker. I haven’t actually looked at what the pin-out is. They claim it’s a usb c connector but yet it’s proprietary, if the connector breaks you can’t just fix it with a run of the mill replacement part that you can get at any electronics store.

Also, off topic, but dude it’s confusing seeing your photo every time, you look exactly like my dad, it’s freaking weird lol.

Hi all,
I am sorry to tell you that no extender is compatible with the touchscreen. The protocol is not the same. Thanks

Surely you’re not referring to every extender, but just active extenders with chips in them.

A passive extender (just wire, no chips) will not affect any such protocols.

As a separate note, repurposing an industry standard connector for custom applications that is not compatible with the wide array of 3rd-party extenders / hubs etc is a bold design decision…

@brent113

I called them out on this before as well, I think I was a bit more blunt and used the words “utterly stupid”.

To not use an industry standard is always a bad decision, unless the intended purpose is to actually become industry standard. I really want to integrate octodash to the Snapmaker but it would most likely be more trouble than it’s worth, would probably need custom firmware to make it compatible with the controller.

I’ve been using the cable I linked above since I got my SM.
I know plenty of other people on FB using extension cables too.

I bought a cheap extension cable from Amazon - works perfectly.k

It works with the following parts:

The cabels terminal is long enough for full connection with the controller

hello my solution
cut away the sheath a bit at the new connector and it works perfectly
7.9 mm long

This is the extender I use. I have had it for months, and have had no issues with it. The key is to make sure that is it rated for power AND data. A lot are only rated as power cables.
