Theoretically; yes. Depending on the metal, your machine setup (1.6W vs 10W laser) and the effort you want to put in.
Stainless steel and anodized aluminum should be fine without any sort of marking spray, however, brass, copper, etc will require something like spray paint, dry moly, cermark, etc to impart enough energy to mark the metal. Then it requires the effort to clean it afterwards, and will likely require a lot of experimentation.
