Not sure whether this would be an easy or difficult fix, but I would love to be able to
turn the enclosure lighting on and off without having to turn the whole machine on.

The LED strip is powered from the main power supply - you have to turn it on, but then the whole machine will turn on 
To do this you need to disconnect the LED strip lighting from the current enclosure controller and connect to some external power supply. Or use some additional LED lighting.
