i just received a brand new Artisan. The first print with one Nozzle works fine. Then I wanted to try out the dual extruder with break away filament for the support structure. The print startet with the Support Structure of the first layer and then changed to the second nozzle and printed. But the right nozzle with the Breakaway structure didn’t retract and dragged over the plate, since the left nozzle was higher. This happend mostly with the first nozzle change, sometimes with the second.
Printing by the right nozzle by itself works fine.
What I’ve tried so far:
using different filament
removing the hot end and cleanig the gears
experimented with different temp settings for the filament
all to no satisfying result.
Also after a print messed up like described above, I opened the Extruder Module. The left nozzle could be pushed upwards easily, the right didn’t move at all (no filament in the right extruder). The i closed, started a new print with only the left nozzle and the right retracted fine.
Ideas Anybody? I’m using Cura as a slicer, since I got way better results than with Luban.
Thanks in advance
Edit: i just printed 3 identical prints in a row with the left extruder. The first two went fine, the third had the same issue with the right extruder not retracting. When trying to move you could hear a sort of creaking sound. So it seems to be a mechanical problem. Any thoughts on that?
When you manually, from the touchscreen, switch from right to left extruder (to heat, load, unload), does the right extruder move up and down properly? Same question during the bed leveling calibration routine?
The extruder can get stuck if there is a filament feed problem, but the unit should throw an error if that happens. So, first order of business is to determine if the dual extruder has a mechanical issue (in which case the extruder extend/retract motion would fail 100% of the time) or some sort of control issue.
I just did surgery on my DE head to install the upgrade kit and that requires disconnecting the retraction motor from the extruder frame that it moves. If it’s not reinstalled properly (uses a jack screw to actuate) the retract action won’t work.
Thank you for the fast reply. When i switch the extruder the right extruder doesn’t move properly. I’m pretty confident, that it is a mechanical issue, even though it isn’t 100% of the time. Sometimes I think I heard a “clicking” sound, like was stopped by something but then “jumped” over the obstacle. This would also fit with the issue not happening every time. And your description of the screw makes this scenario also plausible.
Do you happen to have a manual how to remove( in my case repair) the retraction motor?
I am also experiencing the right nozzle not lifting during DX prints. The right one lifts when homing, or when instructed, or printing with a single nozzle, so it is capable… Mine also makes a ugly noise when it does it. But, when running dual colors it does not, dragging the right nozzle across everything while actively using the left. Used Luban with all defaults on Normal. Very disappointing
Would contact support. There seem to be cases of a broken linear module - see here (also interesting for the others because of the video on dismantling/reassembly of the DX):
