Designing and printing a stand: which filament to use?

I am designing a stand to hold a DJ controller.
The stands are about 65 mm x 270 mm x 50 mm and need to carry a DJ controller that weighs about 7 kg.

Something like this (this is the left part — mirror it to get the right part).

When I asked GPT which material to use, it suggested PETG.
In the slicer, when I select PLA and adjust the settings accordingly, I get a print time (per part) of about 5.5 hours. When I switch to PETG, the print time goes up to about 11 hours (per part).

I know PETG just takes longer, but do I really need the strength of PETG here, or can I just go ahead with PLA?

Hopefully someone can give me some advice.

It depends what you want to do with it. If it’s just for you, PLA will be fine. For somebody else, PETG just feels more professional somehow. PETG is also less likely to soften in a hot environment.

You can shave time off PETG, walls/floors can be thinner and still perform as well as PLA with thicker walls (I don’t like less than 3 wall loops with PLA). PETG is cheaper than PLA.

Personally, long print times don’t bother me much. I just go and do something else, or go to bed!

Okay, it’s for selling. First testing with a friend who asked for this. And there seems to be interest from the DJ community for these kinds of stands.

I’ve done some other tweaking, and the print time dropped dramatically to just 4 hrs per part. So that’s acceptable.

Yes – printing that on its side would remove the need for support, so that is a major optimisation!

If you are looking to sell these I would be heavily thinking on how the two parts join as that will always be a weak point, plus if it was /me/ selling this, depending on price point I’d wanna be printing in ASA/ABS

As per @CrazyIvan flipping it onto its back side from what I can see would remove the need for supports at all as no overhangs then

If you can show a concept draft at least, so we can better visualize how the stand will function. We’d be able to give you better tips.
I’ve not heard of a DJI remote with 7kg wright. The haviest if I remember is 1.15 for agras system. With that said, 5 or 11 hours sounds like overkill on material. But we don’t know how you slice it and what’s it going to look like.

Also, think of environment this stand will be used, stored, transported in. If it will stay in a locked up vehicle, under hot summer sun - PETG won’t be happy with this. Your best b e t is ASA.
Or, maybe, new HT-PLA from polymaker. I didn’t test it myself yet, looks promising. But then UV exposure is an issue with PLA.

You could also implement soft spots in design with TPU to guard the remote from rubbing.

The controller is the DDJ-FLX10 and weighs around 6.7 kg.

I want one left and one right part. Like the pictures below. The DJ controller will then be slightly tilted, about 15 degrees.

My photoshop skills are not the best :slight_smile:

This “new” HT-PLA sounds promissing. Or HT PLA GF., or (just new I guess) HT PLA PRO.
Maybe I should switch to that.
