Control box started making a vibrating noise when I turn it on, I’m guessing is the fan since there are no moving parts other than the fan in it. Open the back to look inside but everything seems to be in order.
If I wait a little and then turn it on again stops making the noise, starts again when I turn it on the next day. Kind of newbie here, need advice. Everything else works great.
@Marcos you mean the PSU? Can you take a video of the sound?
Thank you, give a few to see if I can post it.
Is not letting me post the video, am I missing something here?
@Marcos new members aren’t allowed to post videos, upload it to YouTube and link it here. You could also do Google drive
Thank you, got caught up with work here, a little later.
There’s 20 some odd threads on this forum about the loud fan in the power supply. That’s “normal”
Here’s my fix: Exteme loud power supply fan - #7 by brent113
As a matter of terminology for what’s about to follow, this is the power supply, and there are 2 fans inside. The first, more readily accessible one is the ‘enclosure’ fan, and then inside further there is an off the shelf power supply module that has another internal fan.
In the off chance it’s not the enclosure fan being a problem, you could open it up and unplug the first fan and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then the above linked fan replacement will fix the issue.
If that does not fix the problem then it’s the actual power supply fan having a problem, and that’s not as readily replaceable. If you are under warranty probably ask for a replacement power supply in that case.
Some experimentation by some others have indicated the power supply’s internal fan is sufficient for cooling, and the case fan at the rear is kinda just a bonus. At least a couple people have just unplugged the case fan and not even replaced it. Probably not recommended though…
Thank you so much for your help!! Appreciated, I’ll do that asap, thought for a moment something was wrong with it.
Really helpful .
If you listen closely you can actually hear a bearing of one of the fan’s going out. @Marcos’s PSU louder than my unmodified one. I can hear the chattering of a failing bearing.
I listened closely but all I hear is the tinnitus
@brent113 I used my right ear, my left ear is just SCREEEEEEEEEEE
LOL, chattering is the word. The thing is that it doesn’t make that noise all the time, gave a couple of taps to the back of the fan and now is going strong on a 14 hour 3D print, but tomorrow turning it on again will.
Glad I found a quick easy cheap solution, I’m a noob, thought I was in trouble, thanks guys!
If you buy those replacement fans DOUBLE CHECK THE COLORS OF THE WIRES IN THE CONNECTOR.
Don’t fry something by plugging it in with the colors reversed.
Switching them is a pain, use tweezers or a small knife. Good thing it’s a 5 pack you might break the first one
Shame there’s not a universal standard for fan polarity
That was my next question, red and black are reversed or not? I read to be careful, just like you did, in other words is not a sure thing that the colors are backwards?
@Marcos red to red, black to black. The connector comes reversed if you get the one linked in that post, you just need to take the connector off, flip it and reattach.
Thank you so much for the explanation , I got those yes.
I received the fans today, flipped the connector and voilà, a lot quieter than the original, can barely notice is on, help is highly appreciated, happy again.
Spoke too soon, , noise came back exactly the same, is not the fan. Tried with the back cover off, unplugged the fan, same noise, and I thought the only moving part was the fan, certainly wouldn’t like to send the box to SM, God knows how long it would take to get back to me. Any other thoughts on this? Have a couple of small projects to finish, but I can buy some time with the client.
There are two fans in the power supply.
The one on the back cover is usually the one that is noisy.
Maybe it’s the other one?
