Constant extruder skips/clog warnings

Your request (129626) has been updated.

This is the number.

My email to support says everything my first post says.

Latest attempt with standard PLA, unmodified Curs profile from .50 snapmaker plugin.

Temp 220 in the tool head.

Started out fine, came home to stopped printer because of “clog”.

Heard extruder skipping yet again, look at this extrusion issue.

This printer does not seem to be worth my time.

An example model I have this constant issue with is the Flexi-cat.it’ll start out fine, but as the model goes you can start to hear the extruder skipping, either of them at any given time, especially as it tries to print the tail.

I notice several under extruded layers, if the print job just doesn’t decide to stop telling me the nozzle is clogged, again even though it isn’t.

set the printer speed stupidly low, sub 30%, the issue stops. But that shouldn’t be the way this printer works.

Only time I had it work flawlessly is 15% work speed which means a print took like… 12 hours instead of 3.

I also had increasing problems with clogging in the right extruder. Finally, it stopped completely. Closer inspection revealed that the screw holding the extruder to the motor shaft had come loose. Already made some test prints in mirror mode and the results are perfect.

Can you show me where to check that with a photo? I’ll try anything at this point.

Same… I think there’s an assembly issue or something with the right extruder. I’m having nothing but trouble with it, while the left extruder works great for the most part.

First you unload the filament.
Then you put the printer off.
Then you bring gently the concerned extruder to the middle of the bed (so it will be easier to reach it)
Then you open the idler (front side)
Finally, with a common screwdriver, you gently turn the gears on the motor shaft until you see the screw. (small hex)

Pay attention: if you have to fasten the screw, put the extruder in line with the hole where filament has to go in the hot end.

You are a gentleman, and a scholar. Thank you for this!

Thanks for the photos!

I checked this and both extruder screws were tight, not loose at all.

Tried another print, still clicking.

Is it the angle that the filament is coming into the print head? Has anyone tried to rig it so it goes straight down into the machine? I don’t have the skill to rig something like that.

If the extrusion goes well at first, but after a while the clicking starts again, this usually indicates a partially clogged nozzle. That is why I would definitely first try to completely unblock the nozzle and clean it properly. There are all kinds of ways to do this, but you may already know that. If not, it might be useful to look up how (for example, in the Prusa knowledge base).

Read everything carefully so that you know what you are doing. I am not responsible if something goes wrong!
Then I would try again with a good quality standard PLA filament (dimensionally stable and round)

Hi, thanks for the info, but it’s not a clog.

I have videos of it printing at 100% and the extruder clicking madly, and a second of the same print with the print speed dialed down and no clicking, but apparently I cant post them on this forum due to file type.

In going to mount a shelf above the J1 for a spool holder and try it without the bowden at all. Im having the same issue as y’all

Let us know how it goes! The area where I have the printer won’t allow for me to mount anything above it, it’s just the space I have to work with.

Support said they were able to recreate the issue I am experiencing, so hopefully they can tell me more - they’re checking with R&D.

I hope they give you a solution.

Hi i encountered the same problem, in my case i resolved with printing without the top panel, i thought that the filament could be soften by the warmth just enough to make the extruder teeth skipping… try it

Hi - tried that too. The top panel says “remove when printing PLA”.

yeah i know but i was printing with petg, seems it needs this too… however the symptoms was the same you described extruder skipping steps but it was not clogged, i cutted the damaged part of the filament but after a while it start skipping again. all went well when i tried printing without the top panel.
anyway i hope you’ll find your solution

So it’s been more than a week without new information.

This thing is just gathering dust.

I would caution anyone from buying this printer until these issues are corrected.

Hi,
I also have the same problem on my J1.
And I agree with that there’s some HW flaw which is in extruder and the shape of filament feeding tube.
Especially the feeding tube has too much twisted structure and the same problem occurs easily in other printers with similar complex feeding structrue.

By the way, the clogging is dramatically reduced after applying the following tip.
I hope it is helpful to all of you too.

the main reference is the following comment.

“dip the tip of the filament with oil and just extrude it at higher than normal temperatures, it will create a coating on the barrel that will help with preventing PLA to stick to the barrel.”
