CNC modifying an object

Hello,

So the question I have is related to modifying an existing object. Not cutting the entire thing out of a piece of stock. For example, I have a 2 mm thick plastic disk 150mm in D and it has a 4mm center hole. What I want to do is CNC holes into it to reduce weight. How would I approach this in fusion or another application?

Thanks,
Dan

A typical fusion workflow would be to model the new features and then generate toolpaths for them, same as any other job. Choose a work origin that is something that can be aligned to. For example, if you choose the center of the object as a work origin and there’s a big hole there it might be difficult to accurately align it.

For example, model a hole, apply a circular pattern to it. Switch to CAM, configure your stock, select the hole features and generate a helical boring pass for them or use adaptive clearing and maybe another pass to clean up the surface finish if you need.

When you select the work origin maybe choose a known measurable spot on the workpiece and mark it with a sharpie and let fusion know where that origin is

Hi Brent113,

I’m relatively new at this. I can CNC an entire object out of stock material but I just couldn’t get how to modify an object without the tool trying to cut the entire disc out with the center hole. So, basically I can recreate the disc add the holes then only choose the holes to create tool paths for? I’m not worried about centering that won’t be difficult. Small axle hole.

When you generate toolpath I believe you would be selecting the features you want the toolpath to apply to. So select the new holes you want to add and don’t select the existing hole.

This is a 5 year old video so something may have changed in the interface in the current version, but the idea is you select the faces or edges you want (in this case in 2d adaptive) and fusion will automatically generate the boring operation for the hole you select.

For an under 3m video it’s dense with good tips.

Hey Brent,

I think I got it with your help. I was able to select the holes I wanted to add and generate a tool path. I hope to try it out this evening. Thanks so much for your help!

Dan
