2W IR Q&A Introduction

Have you tried etching chrome? I’ve been told the IR laser will etch chrome. Do you need a marking agent first?

2nd question, how about etching Glass? I have been successful with the 1.6W diode but curious about the IR and can I do it w/o a marking agent? Thanks for all the great info.

I’ve not tried chrome, don’t think I have any chromed plastic… As far as glass, no. It cannot be done without a marking agent.

Huh? I was so sure that glass would work without coating… Interesting… Is it perhaps dependent on the kind of glass?

Could be, I’m sure colored glass would work, but I don’t have any on hand. My guess is the frequency isn’t quite low enough to make glass fully opaque to the laser and it passes right through. However, it makes it easy to laser mirrors. No need to flip them over and mirror your output. Faster as well.

Clear acrylic seems to be hit or miss though. I’ve had success and others have not.

Glossy black tile anyone?

What about Norton white tiles? Anyone tried?
Thanks

You need to buy the QSK for the Snapmaker 2.0. No adapter needed.

No, you don’t. Only for Artisan you get an Adapter. I have my 2W IR laser by now, and the profile at the back goes nicely into the QSK plate, no adapter needed.

If all go right with the shipment, I receive mine friday. :grinning:

Hello,
Just got the laser today…
What setting do you typical use speed/power?
Thanks

Hello,

I have been trying ceramic tiles with NWT method.`
Sadly, I am unable to get better than grey ish and not a good dark like with 10W.
I am suspecting either it is not strong enough or the TIo2 doesn’t react properly with that wave length…

If anyone get it to work… let me know
Thanks

It seems that the IR laser is not absorbed by the glazing of some tiles as @Skreelink shows here: Red Glazed Tile 2W - but if you have the 10W and you get acceptable results, I assume that should be good enough. Or are you needing the finer focus point of the 2W for intricacy?

The 10W is better for the NWT. The IR, however, can go back and modify it. This was done on my XTool IR before I got the snapmaker, but it should be able to do the same;

10W Did the TiO2 black circle
IR blasted it back off.

I still love how it looks like it was painted on canvas.

Spot on, I need accuracy for photography.
Bit sad it won’t work with tiles.
I missed the 1.6W laser… that’s my biggest regret of buying the artisan.

I haven’t been able to get good results with the 10W while the 1.6W was fantastic.
See below.
Anyway, the IR is no go. I will try again the 10W. Otherwise I will try to find a cheap A150!

You cut that out of aluminum foil? Sick!

I’m replying to a necro thread I know but if you wanted a 2nd hand barely used 1.6W from a Snapmaker 2.0 I would part with mine. I never considered it might have a benefit vs. the 10W I replaced it with…

In TX if shipping matters. Not sure if what you’re saying is it doesn’t work on the Artisan at all?
