U1 Top Cover Won't Stay In Place

The printer is great! But the cover leaves me wanting more! It feels like I’m still beta testing! But hey, these are just the product’s growing pains. Knowing this brand, they’ll quickly find solutions!

The author of the initial post… is me! And it’s still me who designed those higher stands! Do you want the file to test it at home?

OK, from the file you uploaded in an earlier post, I see that you do. I don’t understand why they would be called “silent blocks”.

No need, I’ve grabbed it (not that I couldn’t draw one). I don’t have my top cover yet. IMO the centre post needs to be tapered.

Yes, we know. “OP” is standard forum-speak for whoever raised the point first (Original Poster – not necessarily the first post in a thread, but the first post in the current sub-discussion).

Thanks for the feedback, but that wasn’t meant to cause controversy! However, where is “OP” on the original post? And can we find other discussions on the same subject, or even sub-discussions? I didn’t even ask myself whether someone else had already posted something about it!

You’re confused, or you are confusing me! By “OP” I was referring to you!!

Is this easier to understand?:

Its more than that and this issue should not be hand-waved so quickly. They’ve had almost a year to get this right and what we got was an over-engineered plastic cover that costs $150.00. Luckily the simple solution (at least for me) is to remove the foam. I shouldn’t have to 3D print another piece for it to fit properly, and I honestly shouldn’t even have to remove the foam.

I’m confused! I have no issues with your message, or with you, for that matter; all U1 users are my friends! It’s just that I didn’t know the term “OP”! Thanks for your reply!

Got mine today and ran into the exact same issue.

To me, it looks like there might be a slight difference in squareness between the printer frame and the Top Cover, so the four mounting points don’t quite line up properly at the same time.

I thought about removing the silicone mounts from the U1, fitting them onto the Top Cover first, and then placing the whole thing back onto the printer to see if they settle into a better position. I just haven’t had time to try it yet.

Basically: it arrived, I assembled it, tried to fit it, it didn’t fit… and here I am.

Glad I found this thread, though. Hopefully we’ll hear more about the solution the engineering team is working on.

I honestly don’t know what the engineering team can do other than ship future versions with thinner foam or remove the foam entirely. If you have longer mounting points or 3D print any kind of spacer then you are literally defeating the purpose of the foam because you are creating space between the cover and the frame. To me the only option seems logical, remove the foam.

Shame on you Snapmaker.

To wait a year only to put the cover on and go…hmm, these four posts should be longer and the outside plastic perimeter should extend further down the printer.

I can almost guarantee I’ll be mid print some day and this thing will have hovered it’s way to the edge, fallen over the corner, and will hopefully be held up by the filament tubes.

Will the solution be putting our well engineered Walmart tubs back on top? Or should everyone who bought one and cares about this issue return them only to fill a giant plastic landfill in China? Or will the 3d print websites be filled with U1 top cover mods except this time it will be mods of the actual top cover. Maybe I should have cancelled when others did. I don’t see a way they can fix this properly without a new bottom section.

For the time being, I guess I’ll “engineer” some TPU replacements for the silicone plugs that actually extend into the posts and hopefully hold the cover on.

Looked so great coming out of the box and during assembly. Thought to myself, “this is gonna be awesome”. Only to be fully disappointed.

Edit: Also, they included some epoxy fingerprints on the front door handle!

Many things have been said.

I found a solution. Unfo don’t remember where I found it . A simple file to print and add to the four corners

I’m posting my file here that saved my hood and might help some of you. I have no confidence in the initial system implemented; it’s certain that the hood will eventually come off on its own due to the numerous vibrations and head movements! But I don’t hold Snapmaker solely responsible. It’s a combination of factors that caused these “growing pains” with the hood. Snapmaker tested it in their own environment, then users started using it. I hope, and I also hope, that it wasn’t just YouTubers doing it for views! At the time, I asked Sherryl and Zoe several times to be beta testers, but I clearly understood that Snapmaker wasn’t interested. Well, no, I wasn’t going to make a video about it or gain views in the process! Pity for everyone! I don’t consider this a failure, but after the Kickstarter campaign and the time that has passed, this issue should have been spotted long before the hoods were sent to end users. I know this triggers the anger of some users, but hey, that’s the game. It’s simple to model a part to counter the problem, but I know… we shouldn’t have to! We bought a hood that should have been functional. The main thing is that Snapmaker hears us and fixes the problem for other users. As for the machine itself, it’s amazing. Updates keep coming, and it becomes more and more pleasant to use, and isn’t that the main thing? Have a very nice evening, everyone! Stéphane

There’s a little clique of “testers” on the discord server that seem to get first dibs to everything, seems they can do no wrong - Maybe this time its bitten SM in the bum?

My guess is they also have the beta U1s, which just have a more square frame than the production models…

Where is this Discord server located? I’d love to see the discussions about the various beta tests!

The links are top right of this forum, a row of buttons, some of them have had free machines, free lids & now free Hotends - Yet still there are glaring issues to be found??/

Damn glad I didn’t wait for this official one, was put off not only by the wait but the price as well…

I love the print quality of my U1, but you can clearly see where corners have been cut to keep the price point low - My guess is you’ll see the print farmers having issues with them in the next 12-18 months

Could be, and it could be that finalising the top cover was too early for proper beta feedback from real users on production machines (although it has been substantially delayed for other revision work).

It is what it is, but I do think if there is a simple cheap fix it ought to be provided to early purchasers (we were backers, risking cash up front don’t forget). Remodelled screw covers seem to be the solution, but I reserve judgement until I receive my top cover.

I’m not sure about this “remove the foam seal” idea. A “seal” without some kind of gasket isn’t a seal.

The whole machine has more holes than a colander so I very much doubt apart from noise & vibrations that the seal is doing much?

Fair point, but wasn’t there supposed to be some gasketting for the door, IIRC?

But without the foam, regardless of seal, it’s sure to be rattly.

Yes, I believe you get some tape 1 or 2mm thick to put around it - the main issue with the door is the gap by the hinge big enough to drive a double decker bus through!

There’s a really good print in TPU on makerworld that seals that if you haven’t already
