Snapmaker Orca loading time on Windows

  • How long does it take for Snapmaker Orca to load on you Windows machine, from start to 100% operational?
  • Instant
  • ~10sec
  • ~30sec
  • ~1min
  • ~2min
  • I go get a beverage to avoid waiting…

What bothers me is that it takes forever to load and doesn’t even automatically connect to my printer… I have to then manually connect.

The worst part is that I can’t figure out what is happening at that time. Looking in the TaskManager, I see nothing that explains the delay. No big CPU increase, no network traffic, no extraordinary disk or GPU activity.

Seems to me that Snorca is just waiting for a network response, maybe checking my user login. That’s not necessary in LAN mode (like over here) but maybe happens anyway.

You’d need to use something more advanced for this, like

I know - I also could download the source code from GitHub and check there.

That’s not what I want. My point is, there is no obvious reason for the delay.

I just tried something else: OrcaSlicer also takes some time to start, but that is during the splash screen phase where it says “loading configuration”. And there I see a slight increase in memory consumption. This increase happens also in Snorca, but there is no splash screen. So maybe the “Orca splashscreen delay” is just moved to after the main program of Snorca pops up.

Have you seen how long Cura takes to be “ready for action”? At least with that, you see it loading all the settings in the process.

A tip from another forum:

Changing the homepage significantly speeds up the startup of the Snapmaker Orca

Not sure whataboutism is good.

(x) having linux, no problems so far

I have to do some more testing with this setting, because I noticed the first time I open SnOrca, it’s very slow, but then if I close it, and reopen it, it’s faster the second time. Perhaps something is being cached?

But I changed the Default page to “Prepare” instead of “Home”, and it seems MUCH faster to startup!

But then the first time I go to the Home page, the Home page is is VERY slow to open! So I think this is a big clue! Perhaps the root problem has something to do with the Home page?

For now I’ll do some testing with the Default page set to “Prepare” since when I’m opening SnOrca, I’m usually preparing to work on a .3mf file or open a .stl to slice, and rarely do I look to open any of those models on the “Home” page (I have never opened one yet).

I just tried the suggestion above regarding changing the “Default page” in Preferences (from “Home” to “Prepare”). It does start with the “Prepare” tab instead of “Home”, but the interface is still unresponsive for quite a bit of time until you can actual start using it. You cannot use any of the buttons until whatever happens in the background finishes.

@Ray are you using Windows ? With my MacMini M4 it starts fast and is responsive from the first second. See my video here.

It does speed it up…to an extent. The prepare page opens quickly, but the app still spins in the background and essentially freezes and then still doesn’t connect to the printer…have to do that manually…every…single…time…:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

@Steaneb That may well be, but then it is because of your OS. here (Mac) it opens and reacts very smooth.

Well…no issues with Orca, no issues with Bambu Studio, no issues with Cura…

It is a windows 11 machine. Totally not the same experience as mac - yours opens normally, mine stays frozen for a while before you can start using it

How long is “a while”?

I run Win 10 cuz I hate 11, but that aside it can about 1 minute for Snorca to anything but just sit there the first time you open the program. If you close it and open it again it will get there in less than 15 seconds.

Cura on my Linux machine took 56 seconds from launch to useable. That might not sound like much, but it is when you’re waiting.
