It makes me scratch my head that OpenTag is a big old ring. The ones on Snapmaker filament are just a little dot sticker.
I’m just wondering whether the Snapmaker antennas physically can read other tags, e.g. the OpenTag ones.
I didn’t get the ring part either, both the K2 Plus & X1C just have disk about the size of a quarter.
Someone explained on discord. It’s for units that don’t have a spool-sized antenna, so that the tag can be read no matter the spool rotation angle.
Think things like AMS boxes, I guess?
Not necessary for the U1, but good for other printers.
I did this years ago with EEPROM “tags” on Smart Reels from CEL for their Robox printers, I fed
My filament from the external reel holder with normal filament reel and wrapped the filament around the programmed reel like a capstan, and as the extruder pulled in the filament it turned the EEPROMed reel, so it even showed the filament remaining. I’m pretty sure this would work with the U1, but won’t know for a few weeks as I’m waiting for mine. I’d also like more info on the RFID data format, as to whether I could write to new generic tags using an app on my phone.
