Pointers on CNC basics please?

I’m a total newb when it comes to CNC stuff. I tried to search the forums but couldn’t get my wording right i suppose.

I just want to know what went wrong with this relief carve. I used a grayscale image in Luban with a ball end mill at a depth of 5mm. Should I have gone deeper? Did i use the wrong bit?

I just don’t understand why the lines are there.

Deeper just increases distance between highest and lowest points.
What was your density set to?

Which setting is density in luban? What is it called? Is that the “Dot” I left it set to its default which was 5

Thank you for asking this question. I too am completely ignorant (or almost) about all of this stuff. I will wait with you for someone to bring clarity to your problem. I will “eavesdrop”.

The one that says “Density”:

If you want to use the ball-end bit, you can set the Allowance to 2mm and that will do the rough carving.

And then use the V-bit mill to do precise milling and set the density higher.

if i see this picture correctly, then your step over need to be less… like if you use the 3mm ball end-mill your step over should be 0.5mm or less… max rpm and slower cutting speed… especially if you use one program to rough and finish a same time… it will take longer, but you should get the end result as a polished finish… depth only make the picture deeper…
as being said Luban really don’t give you much control, so it’s best if you use (and i hate even saying this, but with this machine no choice ) fusion 360

Luban doesn’t have a step-over setting. The equivalent is “density” which would be equivalent to “resolution” in a graphics program. Higher number = more detail.

Fusion 360 gives you much more control, but there is a definite learning curve.

to me… luban is a week and very confusing program…
