PETG not extruding at all

Trying to test out PETG on the Snapmaker U1 for the first time. Loaded a generic PETG and selected the Generic profile for PETG on the device.

Went to slice and print a small part and noticed nothing was getting printed. Default nozzle temp was set to 255.

I attempted to heat the nozzle to 300, then use the touchscreen controls to extrude the filament but I can hear that the filament is not moving and the extruder is slipping on the filament. I retracted the filament, cut off the end that had the gear marks, and tried again with no luck.

Also tried cleaning the nozzle, didn’t look like anything was stuck inside.

Am I doing something wrong?

I had no trouble at all printing PETG after PLA. I might expect more problems the other way around!

It might not look like anything is stuck inside the nozzle, but what you describe is symptomatic of a clog. Look harder!

While extruding with 300 (just use 260°), push the filament hard into the head by hand. When there shall be small clog, this is the way I solve this on U1. Disassembling the nozzle is a pain on that machine :face_with_peeking_eye:

The temperature is too high. I usually set it to 230-232°C and make sure to keep the fan running continuously. With four hotends, you can also swap one out to see if the issue lies with the extruder mechanism.

There is good chance this is a clog, try same filament on different toolhead and see what happens.

I know you’re trying to print with PETG, I would try printing with the same tool head using PLA. If it extrudes okay then I’d say the issue might be your roll of PETG. Almost sound like it’s smaller than 1.75mm in diameter.

For a clog you could try a cold pull following the directions on the wiki.

Thanks all for the responses. Spent some time disassembling the hot end and found a clog deep inside the hotend.I’m guessing the clog was created when I switched from PLA to PETG and some remaining PLA was still in the hotend causing it to seize.

The piece was stuck far inside and I also couldn’t push it from either end with the hotend pin. flipping the pin around, then heating the handle end to push it into the input end of the hotend to hopefully melt some of it and pull it out. That worked at first, but the second time around it got stuck and when I pulled too hard, the metal pin broke inside.

Luckily I still have the replacement hotend from the package, but that just means I’ll need to order more right away as a backup. Hopefully this was just a one-off event and doesn’t happen that often.

Lots learned, printer is functioning again, hopefully it’ll be smother going forward.

@Gramps-Too How do you use that clog poke thing? I have one too but unable to effectively use with U1. It can directly go from top of hotend as its thick enough that it wont pass extruder gear, cant really use it after taking nozzle off as nozzle need to be hot.
Do you like use external heat to nozzle or something?

it is not thinner than filament, its a thick buoy. lol

If the hotend is still assembled, you can try heating it, then using the poker to go from the bottom up and see if you can unclog it. I had no luck as the piece of filament seems to be above the hot section of the hotend. I was unable to poke it from the top through the extruder gear. I couldn’t see it clearly, either it simply hit the gears or it hit the clog but wasn’t able to push it down.

Once I disassembled the hotend, I could see the hole clearly and see the clogged filament. Flipping the pin around to and heating the pin handle allowed me to push down on the filament and melt it enough to pull out. But the second time I did it, the pin handle got stuck and broke inside the hotend. So overall, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re out of options.

Remove the PTFE tube the heat the problem hotend to 250° C

Hold the extruder gear open

Push the tool down through the hole, filament should start oozing out. Push the tool down until it bottoms out in the hotend.

I then follow up by extruding some cleaning through the hotend.

What do you mean keep the gear open? By pressing that lever?

I don’t think it will pass even with that. Will try it.

The one linked to by @Gramps-Too is 1.6mm, that is thinner than 1.75mm filament.

If your tool is smaller than than your filament which is 1.75mm it will go through til it hits the end of the stuck filament. From there your pushing out the old filament with the tool.
