Currently running under Windows 10 and 11.
Because of windows 10 is going to charge for update in the future i am thinking about going for a new setup.
And i don’t like microsoft windows anymore because of all the updates and bugs.
So i am thinking of Linux or maybe Mac OS.
Can you give me some feedback on what u guys are using and the pro’s and cons.
At the moment i am using laptops for my Snapmakers 3x A350 with quickswap kits. And my tiny Snapmaker Original which i am still using and loving.
So i hopenyou can help me out with my main question which OS is best to use with Snapmaker.
I am currently having the exact same considerations (I hate where Microsoft goes in terms of Online/Cloud account enforcement and data greediness) and try to switch to Linux, which is currently work in progress, so no final experiences to share. Most software exists for Linux, like Cura, Prusa Slicer, Luban etc. People claim that Lightburn does not run on Linux, but their page shows downloads for Linux, so I need to verify myself. Officially they support Windows & Mac OS. And I will miss Windows 3D Builder as a quick and simple tool to model not too complicated models, but there are alternatives. Yet have to try Fusion, which according to reading a bit around may be tricky with Linux.
In general, going for Mac OS will give you better software support, as it is more attractive for software vendors. Linux is considered by many as an unimportant niche product. Still, Apple - like Microsoft - is somewhat interested in getting you into the cloud and get your data, so I am currently still Linux minded.
Ever since they changed from built-in login to browser login, it’s been iffy/not working on Linux. I tried my hand at it, going by the github instructions on running it and never got it to work myself. Even a buddy of mine, full time Linux user, couldn’t get it to work right. It logged in once, lagged out, and failed ever since.
The operating system is independent from the printer. It is only important which software can be used.
I am running all my devices on Linux and use either Luban or Cura (for 3D printing). Both are available as native Linux versions.
For 3D printing design i am using Onshape CAD. But meanwhile FreeCAD came to V1.0 which now can be properly used as well.
There is a project to get Fusion running on Linux as Wine-Application, but i am not a fan of it.
Onshape is browser based and runs on any OS.
I do not use Lightburn because Luban does, what i need to do.
a simple setup. a350, enclosure in the “machine room”. i am running mac os and have been from the start so i have no offerings on others for this.
for mac, there were some rough bits. however, that was many versions of luban ago. my workflow uses luban to load the model or gcode and send it to the printer over wifi. the interface has been clean and the software has been working as documented. i haven’t had any real issues with the system.
other software: freecad has always worked, lightburn, fusion 360, cura, prusaslicer all have performed well.
ive had a few fails. circuitmaker a pretty good pcb software only works on windows. the other package fails were also mostly limited to working on windows.
Hello,
I work exclusively with Linux from more than 20 years. (Presently Linux Mint).
I always get success.
I use FreeCAD, Luban, Cura (…and for PCB I use Kicad )
Also, even if I have no experience with that, web applications could sometimes be a solution. And, in this case, you are not dependent of your OS.
