I would like to be able to make a very simple colour sandwich , say, black bottom layer from one nozzle, and white top layer from the other nozzle. I can’t get Luban to enable me to stack these different layers and for these layers to be connected to their specific nozzle.
Any clues? Let me know.
Roger
You need to create two models, one for each color, align them in the slicer and assign them to the extruders - at least that’s my understanding as of now. If you download multi-color models e.g. from Thingiverse, they are created in that way, and extruder assignment works like that. I have yet constructed uncomplicated models where I had two seperate models for each color anyhow, so my experiance is limited in designing two-color models myself. I seem to understand that the .3MF file format can have different colors and allows the assignment of extruders to sub-parts of the model, but I have not tested that yet.
A quick search pointed me here: How To Make A Dual Extrusion 3D Model | MatterHackers this looks like a good starting point for a better understanding.
Thanks Hawke,
I have already done some of the things you suggest and can get two different items with different assigned colours to print, next to each other but can’t plonk one on top of the other as a sandwich. The ALIGN function is useless in the z plane. That is my stumbling block.
I do think that for the price of the dual filament extruder, some operation instructions could be provided. It seems to me that Luban hasn’t been let into the secret.
Cheers

The align button works. What are you experiencing?
I too had the same issue trying to create a simple name tag, base white - name black. first created one model; but did not know how to assign the two extruders. So I separated them & like you found you could not stack. (I may go back & print that way with the name embedded in the base).
Instead I added 2 small standoff pins to raise the name above the base & that worked (base 3mm, name 3 mm sitting on 3 mm pins then center aligned).
Now I see other suggestions to try.
I can’t get the ilign to work in the Z plane, therefore no stacking

These are simple shapes. I would put the smaller octagonal thing on top of cylindrical thing. When I download them, they automatically separate and are placed on the same plane. I have tried using the Align button but this just shoves them around on the same plane. Doesn’t do anything vertically.
I note that in your sample pic that you have four print modes whereas, in my Luban, it only comes up with Normal (which is the one shown that you used) I think that I have the latest Luban. Maybe that’s the prob.

1.STL (1.45 KB)
4.STL (8.09 KB)
I imported your 2 stl files to blender and also my 2 objects. This is how they all are positioned in 3dspace without editing:
As you can see, your objects are not positioned on top of eachother and can therefore not be aligned in such a way using the align button in Luban.
Something in your workflow is not working like you want it to. I would suggest looking into the creating and downloading part… what software are you using to do that?
Turbocad 2022 Platinum. An engineering program like Autocad but has full 3D capability which is great for engineering, as you design objects as models very quickly. It does export in STL.
It obviously hates Luban, eh?
I’m in Melbourne Australia, where are you?

Ok, well i’m pretty sure you will get the same or similar results in all the slicers out there with these stl files. The problem is the stl files and how the objects are positioned in them. Unfortunately I dont know anything about Turbocad. I use mostly Fusion360 and Blender…
I’m located in Stockholm Sweden =)
Cheers!
Got it! I have discovered that I have to watch my reference points and work planes.

Hey Roger, unfortunately, Luban doesn’t allow for changes to the Z axis, so you have to alter the stl file for the color you want to have risen off the base plate higher by adding a standoff underneath it, you can import files into tinkerCad and then export it back allowing you to vertically layer your objects, until Luban comes with an update to adjust the Z axis placement i believe this is the only option.
If you really want to move an object in Z, you can do so with the move tool and then right click before you release the left mouse button… at least in the version that I have installed (4.6.3).
Hey thanks, that does work

Wait, it doesn’t work once you press the preview button it drops back down to the build plate in Luban

Ok, so you gotta hit group before clicking on Generate G-code

Sure no problem. Of course, the best thing would be to avoid having unaligned objects to begin with, but that is another discussion
