While I wait for a replacement linear modules for the original ones that lasted 1 hour I was wondering if I could get some recommendations on a 3d scanner which I might invest in to make use of my time pending rebuild of my immobile printer

That is a hard place to be in most quality finished scanners of that size are quite expensive. If you like DIY the Xbox kinect does a decent job. Here is an article about it:
