Confused about how to use laser with real items (wallets, iPhone cases, etc)

Dear sdj544
your glass etching is amazing. How did you get this result?
I don’t know dry moly lube. What steps and settings are necessary?

Smae

Thanks! It’s always fun to try new stuff and push boundaries of what people think possible.

Spray on a nice even coat (mask anything you don’t want it on), let dry for 15-30 minutes, repeat.
Laser @ 100% power and 200mm/m (may have been 400mm/m)
Use IPA to remove excess lube.
Works to mark stainless steel also.

Dear sdj544

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I don’t find anybody selling Dry Moly Lube here in Europe.
I will try to find again.

Many thanks
Smae

Might be under a different brand or name but the equivalent is definitely is available in the EU.
You can also use sharpie or black dry erase marker.

@sdj544 You think teflon dry lube would work? Or would that just generate cancer. I have a whole bunch of DuPont teflons spray laying around

I don’t really understand what about the moly allows it to work.

Maybe. For glass it’s just a matter of having something that heats up. Technically anything black will work.I think the moly is probably just very effective at retaining and/or transferring the heat and maybe lasts a little longer before it gets vaporized.

BTW, I had a very interesting result from tests trying to do a jigsaw puzzle. Was cutting the black back side of poster board and it wasn’t laying flat. I layed a piece of glass down hoping it would still cut through. Nothing to lose at that point. When it was done it didn’t work to cut through the poster board, but the glass was deeply etched with the puzzle pattern (etching on bottom side that was against poster board):

With stainless steel there’s a chemical reaction that bonds the moly to the surface.
Don’t think the teflon would work but if I had some I’d try it.
I just read that mustard works. Not sure if it needs a higher power laser than SM.
Everything eventually gives you cancer.
Just would make sure I had good ventilation and wouldn’t do a lot of it.

I saw that, seems like it’s the vinegar in the mustard that’s important, along with it being a paste.

Could mix the vinegar with baking soda to make the paste instead

It must be the smoke and debris that helps with the etching, that is very interesting.

I agree teflon probably won’t work as well as other materials.

Thanks for the insights.

A spray containing graphite would probably be very effective.

I have that also, will try someday
