Auto focus Laser Module - strange values

I made the auto focus for the Laser Module. (1600 mW)
The objekt is wood with a thickness of 3,5 mm.

After focus the display and Luban tells me “Laser height 21,5 mm”.

If I start working, the Laser is about 2mm away from my object.

What does the “Laser height 21,5mm” meen ?
Is this very short distance to the object normal?

That is normal. The actual laser/lens is higher up inside the black tube. I think that is where the focus measurement is from. You can actually unscrew and remove the end off the black tube to give more clearance. I think it is there just to prevent reflections from the laser getting out. Just make sure you use the goggles.

search m posts on setting the laser to engrave at any height you want. Also worth checking my last two posts on laser use which allow the laser focus to be manaully adjusted so it can be 200mm from build surface if you wanted

The laser height should be the material thickness + laser focal height ( mine is around 24 mm) In my case the laser cap is about 6mm above the workpiece.
If you screw off the laser hood you will see the actual laser is a bit higher up in the unit, I think that’s the cause of confusion here…

Thanks for all the answers.
I srewed the first part of the black Laser tube off and now I have good space to work with thicker material.
With this modufication I’m cutting 4 mm wood within 9 passes.
Works good ! I’m impressed.
