200W CNC bottom plate

What is this piece (in red) for? Just cosmetic or does it serve a structural purpose. I tried to loosen the 4 screws fastening it but no dice, they’re very tight (I assume with loctite). I’d like to remove it and use the screws/holes to attach a vacuum attachment.

speculating but might be a thrust bearing cap…

Ah, you’re probably right. Thank you.

In case you missed this thread: CNC self-impelled vacuum dust shoe (no external vacuum required)

I have the version for the 50w CNC module… Can’t wait to see the 200w module version coming out…

I saw that (it’s innovative), but I can just buy a better one for the 200W now for less than the cost of those STL files.

Interesting. Gotta take a look at that… Thx for sharing…

Hi Slartibartfass - I was doing some research as I’m starting the design on the 200W CNC self-impelled dust shoe and saw this. Just wanted to let you know it’s definitely coming soon.

Great. Let me know if you need measurements off the module. I got the 200w CNC module already… Happy to help…

This bottom cap is a form of “Labyrinth seal” Basically the entire purpose is to reduce the chances of dust getting into the bearings on the underside of the spindle motor.

Underneath this, surrounding the spindle is an aluminium collar piece that’s press-fit to the spindle collet, that sits in a groove on the inside ring of the underside of this cap.

Dust can still get inside this piece, if it’s fine enough. If any dust makes its way inside here? Bye bye bearings.

Bought this too on Ali. Had to grind the tool mounting from 45mm to 45.8mm but now it works fine.
Only thing is, that it is just working for long router bits, for me just for those with 6mm shank. I will print an alternative shoe which should also work for the 1/8" bits.
