If the U1 ran zeroconf, we could address it from our web browsers as (for example) http://u1.local, instead of having to remember what IP address it is on.
User choice. I’m all about user choice.
Zeroconf advertises the device name on the network so that knowledge of the (current) IP address isn’t necessary to access it. Yes, you could do something similar with a local DNS, and some routers have the capability to run a local DNS, but it’s a complex set-up. Air Print printers (etc) use zeroconf (or something like it) so if you want to print from your phone or tablet, it just works. The phone lists the printers it can see, and you select which one you want to print from.
For the U1, that would amount to SnOrca being able to link to it without the user putting in the IP address, or accessing the Fluidd control panel but just typing “U1.local” into the browser address bar.
