Snapspeed... and other filaments

I feel embarrassed to say this, but I have been printing mostly in Snapmaker Black & White PLA. It works so effortlessly that frankly, I’ve been slow to branch out. Now though, I have several alternative colors and materials. All PLA, but Snapspeed, matte etc. and some other manufacturers. What I’m wondering is, when the material demands or offers other settings, like the higher speed capabilities of Snapspeed, how do I take advantage of them? Do I have to enter the parameters like speed into Orca? …or does Orca’s filament library understand these and make the necessary changes?

I use the same printing parameters for all PLA, regardless of brand. Some of the types with additives, like carbon fiber or wood, might need to be tweaked, but I haven’t worked with them yet.

If you’re worried about it, print a temperature tower with your new filament.

That’s great advice. I haven’t made a temperature tower yet. I’ll give that a whack if a PLA doesn’t run well.

Any thoughts on Snapspeed? would I make the adjustment in Orca for the working speed?

When you select the new filament, Orca will know the maximum flow rate of that filament (assuming the filament is in the library already), but it won’t automatically update the print profiles, so it will allow for parts to be printed faster, but you still have to set your movement speeds in the print settings.

Ahhh. You have cleared up so much. I couldn’t figure out why updating the filament wasn’t affecting the speeds in Orca. I haven’t really been looking at those at all until recently. I expected to see something like “working speed” which the laser has but instead there are a LOT of speeds. Any pointer to a source to explain which I should focus on? Previously, I slowed down inner curves (I don’t think that’s what it’s actually called) and that reduced stringing a lot. This feels more like a balancing act and picking and choosing carefully rather than just stomping on the gas at 300mm/s.
