Questions about lens

Hi,

I received my Ray some day ago and hope someone can answer me some questions about the lenses used in this laser

  • Inside the accessory box there is a “Laser Lens Protector”. Is this a spare part or do I have to mount this protector before using the laser cutter?
  • If this is a spare part: contains the protector a lens that has to be changed after some time of use?
  • I have read about lenses of laser cutters that are made of zinc selenide (ZnSe), a in some situations toxic material. Is the lense of Ray also made out of ZnSe and are there some special cautionary measures to follow?
  • I’ve read in the wiki, that I should use ethyl alcohol to clean the lens. Would isopropanol also ok to clean the lens?

Sorry that I have so many questions, but I’m new to this topic

Not positive about the Ray, I have the SM2 with 20w laser. I queried support about that Laser Lens Protector as a spare part. Apparently they will get dirty beyond being able to be cleaned at which time you need to replace it. Not sure how to determine that point, yet, but that is their story.
I’m using denatured alcohol, not sure about isopropyl, but it should work also.
Don’t know about the ZnSe question.

Zinc selenide lens is used for focusing a co2 laser at my work which is used for cutting and welding steel strips.
You need to ask support about but from my guessing it’s too expensive for equipping these blue lasers. But the orange color would be correct for znse.

Maybe here something to read:

Hi, thanks for your answers and your help!
Ok, so maybe I will also contact the support :+1: I wasn’t sure if maybe someone of Snapmaker Support also reads here what problems arise.

When I’ve got answers I will also report back here. If someone has other informations about this topic they also clearly are interesting - also for newbies only looking into the Ray forum :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for the link to the other topic, that helps a lot to understand some points that were not clear.

Hi,

I’ve already got the answer of the Snapmaker Support (extremely fast :slightly_smiling_face::+1:).
To help others with same questions here is what I got:

  • Inside the accessory box there is a “Laser Lens Protector”. Is this a spare part or do I have to mount this protector before using the laser cutter?
    • Yes, the lens protector is a spare part.
  • If this is a spare part: contains the protector a lens that has to be changed after some time of use?
    • It is a protective piece placed in front of the lens.
  • I have read about lenses of laser cutters that are made of zinc selenide (ZnSe), a in some situations toxic material. Is the lense of Ray also made out of ZnSe and are there some special cautionary measures to follow?
    • The lens protector is made of quartz material and is non-toxic. For information on how to clean, please refer to the wiki.
  • I’ve read in the wiki, that I should use ethyl alcohol to clean the lens. Would isopropanol also ok to clean the lens?
    • Please use ethanol or water to clean the lens protector.

Additionally I asked for some information about the “dashboard wax” used to clean the steel strip. The support said that for example a product like this one could be used:
