Laser (40w) engraving to depth

Hi,
I upgraded my Artisan with the 40W laser.
My engraving tests are strange. The laser always engraves quite deeply. Even when it is only set to “bright” or weak. With the 10W laser I could only engrave superficially and quite darkly.

I’m slowly running out of ideas.

I focus with the manual leveler. I also set the laser and thus the focus point higher. The result is again relatively deep. I test with Luban and Lightburn. The same observations with both.

Do you have any idea what could be causing this and which parameter I need to change? Or what error in my thinking?

Air assist is only recommened for cutting.
If you use less power like your 5% Grey scale it not too deep, isn’t it?
