I’m using Cura with the Snapmaker Plugin for Artisan and have been trying to do some prints. However when I get the GCode onto the Artisan the print immediately errors out with “Inappropriate Retraction Distance”. This is even if I disable retraction. What am I doing wrong here?
The only time I’ve had that error was when trying to use more than 2mm of retraction. Do you have firmware retraction enabled in Cura by any chance? If so, try turning that option off.
Also make sure that you don’t have some weird retraction setting on the other extruder even if you are not using it for this print
Hi everyone.
Sorry to open this old thread, but since two days i am having the same issues.
My Cura settings are within range for both extruders:
I am using my Artisan with two 0.6 nozzles since months but the problem occured only the last few days.
It’s independent from what material or print profile i am using.
It doesn’t happen when using Snapmaker Luban as slicer
Print went fine without issues.
Thoughts on that?
Thanks
It’s just a sanity warning if you use more than 2mm retraction. I guess SM had problems with larger retraction distances in their testing. I find that 2mm works fine for Elegoo Rapid PLA+ and Rapid PETG.
It might be a sanity warning. But as you might have seen in the screenshots i am not using retraction > 2mm. So the message shouldn’t be there.
The message is there with a red sign and i would assume for a good reason.
It came out of nowhere, before that it was working without issues.
Using the same settings in Luban doesn’t produce this warning.
I had exactly the same problem and found that the retraction settings in Cura were out of whack, especially when using both extruders. It’s to the point where I upload the gcode, get the error, then kick myself for forgetting to check / set the retraction setting in Cura which for some reason keeps changing back to 15mm (a bonkers value).
As you can see the retraction is set properly - at least it looks like.
I fixed the problem by removing the entire Cura profile from my laptop and launched Cura again which runs through the setup process again (thanks to Linux it is a lot easier than on Windows).
Problem is gone. I don’t even know if it was a wrong setting in printer, material or print profile. But i don’t care any longer. Sometimes the hard way is the easier and shorter way
FWIW: I’ve used retraction settings with 8mm retraction successfully - IMHO the warning is a relict from the times the DX was fresh and had the heat creep problem that was later fixed by the new door design. Past then, for a while retraction settings were discussed as the root cause and the warning was introduced.
