Android cell phone terminal console?

Is it doable to connect a cell phone to the machine and use a terminal program to communicate with the controller, run commands and get feedback? or do you need to have a special console to translate the marlin stuff ?

I use PuTTY. It’ll work. Straight raw serial terminal.

The controller doesn’t auto repeat, you have to enable local repeating to see what you’re doing.

dope, ive used putty a bit in the past from a windows machine

also if i can use a straight up serial terminal, i can implement PLC stuff pretty easily… that opens up some windows.

Baud is 115200 fyi.

Franky gave me his config awhile ago, maybe you’ll find this useful also:

Sometimes it’s handy to turn off “close window on exit”.

Thanks a lot man i appreciate it! This level of functionality is something I am really needing to get more involved with for work, i am totally not acclimated with any kind of communication outside of a computer network environment, but i have been starting to dabble a bit and have done some minor things here and there.

Trying to get into modbus as well

about to implement a modbus tcp/ip logic controller to run some HMIs on a gate, one for each direction, i have successfully done some examples of it i need to scale it up to a broader use though, new product coming out that i dont have a lot of extra I/O available due to the type of motor we are usiing so i have to use modbus hmis to act as indicator displays for public use

always just used multi color indicator lights so this is a big step for me

i didnt get involved in higher education so im always just out there winging it, but its a lot of fun when you make something cool happen!

ew modbus :stuck_out_tongue:
~DNP3 gang

i will have to look into that, although i dont believe the logic controller brand we currently use (or the previous one for that matter) has any peripherals to implement it.

none the less i will look at it and see what its all about

modbus is still the most common protocol. But DNP3 has great features for event driven data. It’s used extensively in the electric utility industry. Each data transmission is timestamped, with an attached quality. Controls can be required to select before operate for security. There’s the modbus-esqe ‘class 0’ poll of all data, but usually data is transmitted via class 1 (or 2, or 3) requests for only changes, and not the whole data set, more efficient use of bandwidth. And DNP3 allows for unsolicited messaging, which really cuts down on response time.

The SCADA system I designed at work, from the time an event happens in the field, to the time it’s reported in SCADA, is under 1s, and logs show the packets arrive just a few milliseconds after the event happens, the rest of the time is processing delay to display it.

DNP is pretty cadillac.

oh man just the unsolicited messaging sounds like a major bonus in itself to avoid the polling very interesting! although i think modbus tcp will allow multiple masters at least, or so ive heard.

So does DNP: Benefits of DNP3

i assumed as such  pretty cool, i am going to review crouzet’s literature to see if they offer anything for this before i go too deep down the rabbit hole

Looks like outside of the energy market they don’t q_q

Oh well lol. Modbus works just fine.

I still support modbus systems, they’re used more in the process SCADA side of things.

we are limited in what we offer - standalone products requiring contact closures to activate and do their own thing, i really am excited at the prospect of having a more cohesive solution for security needs and one day i want to make my own access control software to work with our equipment

ive dabbled in all the necessary areas a tad, so its feasible, but a huge challenge for someone like me

That sounds pretty exciting. Getting one of those systems up and running from scratch sounds overwhelming to me. I’d rather pay a vendor to provide a solution

there are plenty of companies who offer the proper accessories and software solution out there, but our biggest competitor has their own so when people want a “turn key solution” we turn them to one of our dealers because i am not trying to get involved with all that unless we make it, which cuts 30% off our sale!

Ha, I’m one of those people. Turn key please.

i am for a lot of things, yeah, but sometimes its fun to rig stuff to work the way you want it too

Yea outside of work i seem to have that problem, lol.
