@xchrisd @Wyphorn @MonkeyHarris Tagging you three since you guys stayed through the harrowing adventures of Baba. For those playing at home, I got sent an angry return as a prize and managed to save the machine. That story can be found here. She’s still running strong, Baba Is Make. ![]()
Today’s adventure was an A250 I had purchased and sold to the company I worked for as their first laser engraver. Naturally, I was his caretaker.
The machine’s name; Thanatos.
Thanatos had been a beast, naturally, doing some 3D printing work, but mainly as a laser cutter/engraver. Fast foward to last week…
Disaster.
A fire had broken out in the shop, in sub-freezing temps, after hours. A fast, hot blaze… destroying everything. What wasn’t caught by fire, was drowned in smoke and water. The heat melted the 3D printed filament guide on the machine!
A full week goes by before I’m able to enter the building and check the wreckage… it looks bad… so bad… water had pooled in the ‘enclosure’ heat scorched the outsides and through the semi-open top…
Quick glance in near pitch-black wasn’t too bad… but getting it out into the light. You can see the water streaks that rained down on him.
Carefully, I decided to bring him home for some TLC and a few more pictures. Heartbreaking.
Let’s get some cleanup going! Little bit of elbow grease and getting the bed and laser off.
Still looking rough.. Let’s get the power supply as well and see how the laser is doing.
Some deep cleaning on this poor 10W, but lookin’ good! After more work, there’s some obvious staining and some heat damage… but hopeful. (Ignore the brown marks, that’s just leftover from wood cutting, I haven’t taken a toothbrush down into the laserbed yet for those)
POWER!
And for you sluts in the back, I know what you’re thinking… that screen… it’s so pretty… I had left the factory screen protector on… So you get to enjoy, this post-fire… smoky peel.
Just look at this filth!
And in the end; Thanatos survived. Scarred, but going strong.
