Are there any firmware limitations to this? (I’ve only ever used Paxx12 firmware and plain Orca Slicer, so not familiar with the stock firmware/Snorca)
Yes, the link seems to indicate that the option for multiple nozzle sizes is built into standard Orca since 2.2.0 beta. They recommend making the profile “nozzle agnostic” by setting line width in percentages in relation to the actual nozzle size.
I’m not real experienced with 3d printing or the U1, so was just curious if anyone had successfully done this, or if I’m missing anything. But the lack of responses here maybe means it hasn’t been tested much, if at all. I might just need to make the leap! We’ll see
It’s a very new thing, only recently enabled in the U1 firmware and not yet supported in SnOrca, so…
So I wonder why the desire to fiddle with this. Using multiple nozzle diameters in one print is niche to say the least, an optimisation for when you’ve run out of other optimisations. Unless you’re doing production printing, hobbyists make one-offs – and spending hours perfecting the slicing is never recovered in the printing time.
Fair enough . Probably a little of the motivation behind it. But not really. I enjoy some experimentation, but generally if it’s moving toward something that’s potentially useful.
I realize there would be extra calibration required if, e.g., a 0.6 nozzle is added to the mix, but I could also see even a hobbyist “standard” set-up on the U1 being three 0.4 nozzles plus one 0.6. You put your primary filament on the 0.6 for a bit more speed. Or the 0.6 is hardened steel for abrasives. Or you have two 0.6 and two 0.4. Some options. It might lead to a “regular” set-up that allows for more variety/speed/strength options with less frequent changing out of toolheads or nozzles. Doesn’t seem to be that odd or niche of a discussion to have. Especially with both Snapmaker and Orca Slicer making some movement in that direction, it may well indicate community interest in the feature.
All in all, though, to each their own, and appreciate the input.
