Hi all,

We bought the Snapmaker Original and the enclosure a couple weeks ago with my company.
I’ve been digging around the internet looking for tips and tricks for 3D printing since the last time I had a printer was somewhere around 6-7 years ago and I expected a lot of things being different.

I made several prints since then. Some good and some bad ones. The bad ones seemingly all came out the way they did because the PLA didn’t stuck to the buildplate.

On friday I left the printer running with [this](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1092181) model on the preset “High Quality” settings and the filament that arrived with the machine.

This was the result by monday morning:

 ![107621064_607115349937259_4621568331999135415_n](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex022/uploads/snapmaker/original/2X/4/4469aa7d372ac984bad749112d824a8b752266b0.jpeg)

My first bet would be that the same happened here.
The filament didn’t stuck to the build plate and that led to this chaos but I’d really like to hear your opinions based on experience.

Generally spaghetti prints like this happen when the model you were printing or part of it become detached from the build plate.

You should always stick around to inspect your first couple of layers going down. That way you can be sure that it has stuck well and there arent any other problems. I always watch at least my first two layers and if they go down fine Im pretty confident the print will be fine.

Hi!
I forgot to mention that I did exactly that when I started it.
I usually print everything with a skirt too so I can make sure that it will stick.
It started out just fine but this is what greeted me in the morning.

This is a adhesion problem caused by bad leveling.

In general i would say, you should make a custom profile in Luban.
The first layer should be printed at around 15mm/s and a good 1st layer height for adhesion is 0,2mm at a 1st layer width of 120%.

So like C.Harris said, looking the first layers makes sure if there could be adhesion problems.
The next thing i would suggest you is to clean the buildplate with isopropanol or something else.
If you have leveled your machine really well, like pefect,- record your offsets which you could call with M503 in Luban-console.

Hope this helps!

If you still have problems or are unsure, dont hesitate to post on here again perhaps with an accompanying image or video of your first layer? The more info we have the better help we can provide!

Usually an image of the model you are trying to print is valuable as well.

Right now I’m printing a smaller pac man ghost figurine.
Looks like the first layer stuck perfectly and is now almost complete.
However the “big” test is still on the way in the form of a prize wheel of some sorts that I’ve been trying to
perfect last week with no success since the first layer never stuck well enough.

UPDATE:
The print finished and with the settings recommended by [xchrisd](https://forum.snapmaker.com/u/xchrisd) the initial layer adhesion was perfect!
 ![20200713_135831](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex022/uploads/snapmaker/original/2X/5/57bfd58e39a03a14071c467635d2618d5353c0fd.jpeg)

But sadly another issue came to surface which I have never encountered before:

Can you share with us the following:

- The material you are printing in
- your machine settings such as temperatures, speeds etc. (screenshot or list)
- if you try to load filament can you push it through the nozzle without problems? If not you may have a jam which you will need to clear
- Is your filament new out of a vacuum bag or have you had it quite awhile?

To me it looks like you are having extrusion consistency issues which could be due to blockage or poor quality/degraded filament. It also looks like you may be underextruding and it would be worth calibrating your e-step to verify.

this is a very good guide to e-step calibration:

> **[Extruder Calibration - Matt's Hub](https://mattshub.com/blog/2017/04/19/extruder-calibration)**
>
> Having your extruder properly calibrated is essential for perfecting your print quality, and this guide will walk you through the entire process from beginning to end. There are two parts to calibrating your extruder - tuning your extruder steps/mm...

I’m using PLA.

Here are my current settings which I used to print the ghost shown above:

 ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex022/uploads/snapmaker/original/2X/3/3f0ea4ba4a2f568135c3909de463f98393228c92.png)

I had an issue with filament loading on the second day of use but I was able to resolve it and ever since I haven’t noticed any difficulties or grinding. Now when I change the filament and push the new one in it flows out without being jammed.

I’m was using the material that came with the printer. Now I’ve changed it to another PLA.
This one is pretty new. It’s been open for about a week in our office which I wouldn’t call very humid. Also it was never exposed to direct sunlight.

Thanks for the tutorial! I’ll look through it, hopefully I’ll be able to resolve the issues.

Looking at your settings a few things jump out at me:

First, you have wall thicknesses set to 0.1mm, are you using the standard nozzle that came with the printer? If so its a 0.4mm nozzle so that should be your minimum wall thickness.

Second, your top thickness is only one layer (0.1mm thickness with 0.1mm layer height), increasing this will improve the print quality on the top, I would suggest a minimum of 5-6 layers for a 0.1mm layer height.

Speeds looks fine, perhaps slower than you need but this wouldnt be the cause of any of your issues.

Your retraction is very excessive which likely is what is causing your filament to grind and not feed properly leading to the gaps you see on the print. For PLA with a direct drive extruder like on the SM1.0 I would suggest 1-3mm of retraction distance at 15-30mm/s.

Can’t thank you guys enough for all the help.
I’ve set everything according to your recommendations and printing another test right now.

The test came out lightyears better then the previous one.
Here is a comparison between the two:

 ![20200713_163331](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex022/uploads/snapmaker/original/2X/5/5fd51ee47738eabc36d791a24605c0da916702be.jpeg)
Now I’ll start to make a bigger model which will take a lot more time, but I have my hopes up considering the improvement just by the settings you recommended.
Thank you!

I’ve had issues with the v1 and filament feeding on larger models. The default spool location can cause the filament to bind and grind. There are several “snapmaker filament” models on thingiverse that should help prevent that.

Yeah, I’m not sure that it’s the best how it is as deafult. Especiall now that it’s in the enclosure it seems a bit janky to me. Originally I used the teflon tube that comes with the enclosure kit but I ditched it because even at the first run in the enclosure it was visibly struggling to feed itself.
