Snapmaker U1 – Weak WiFi signal reception (likely antenna/module issue)

Hello All!

I’m experiencing consistently weak WiFi signal reception on my Snapmaker U1, and I’d like to report it and request assistance.

Device: Snapmaker U1
Firmware version: v1.5.2-paxx12-21

Issue description:
In the room where the printer is located, my phone and laptop both show a strong signal (4 out of 5 bars) and connect/operate flawlessly on the same network. However, the U1 shows a very weak or barely detectable signal in the exact same location.

Troubleshooting already performed:

  1. Network band: The router only broadcasts 2.4 GHz (no 5 GHz interference or band-steering involved).
  2. Channel congestion: Checked all 2.4 GHz channels — they are free, with no nearby neighboring networks causing interference.
  3. Distance test: When I temporarily moved a WiFi access point closer to the printer, the signal strength improved significantly and the printer worked reliably.
  4. Firmware: Already on the latest version I could find, v1.5.2-paxx12-21.
  5. This is my first time reporting this issue.

Based on this testing, the problem appears to be isolated to the printer’s WiFi reception (antenna or WiFi module), since other devices in the identical location and on the identical network do not experience any signal issues.

Could you please advise:

  • Whether this is a known hardware issue with the U1’s WiFi antenna/module.
  • Whether a repair, antenna replacement, or module replacement under warranty is possible.
  • Any additional diagnostic logs you’d like me to export and send.

Thank you for your help.

I use a wired connection so can’t directly help, but I would log a support ticket below as then the right engineering dept can go through troubole shooting/diagnostics with you as its more community help in the forum here:

The only other thing I can think of is have you given your U1 a fixed IP address on your network?

Also the PAXX FW is not officially supported, have you tried the latest SM version? (I doubt this will make a difference but will rule out PAXX)

I’d like to gather some statistics. Is this a widespread issue, in which case I should replace my router with a new, more powerful one? Or is it just my problem, in which case I’ll contact Snapmaker’s support team.

By the way, how did you set up the wired connection? Do you need a LAN-to-USB adapter? Is it possible to connect a USB hub to the printer’s single USB port?

You do.

I don’t know, somebody else’s answer will be of interest.

FWIW, I don’t have a very sophisticated WiFi, and my phone only reports 3 bars in the location of the U1, but the U1 reports a full 4 bars. Anecdotally, this seems to suggest a problem with yours, perhaps the WiFi antenna (if there is a separate one) has become disconnected internally.

I operate in “LAN Mode” (meaning traffic is confined to my home network and does not go via the cloud server).

Yes. A static IP address has been assigned.

I haven’t restored the firmware yet. I’ve reset it to factory settings.

Yes, I bought this one from amazon:

I don’t know about a hub, curious as to why you’d need one? FW I just pull that adapter out plug in the usb stick/update and back in again

I’m using the 1.4.1 PAXX as the one you have is still considered a beta currently - I doubt its the issue but if nothing else it discounts something else off the list of possibilities

It has been mentioned a few times…

Why not move it permanently (or use another unit)?
It would be best to give a second unit a unique SSID, then the printer wouldn’t randomly
swap to the previous one as has been reported.

The problem has been sorted. It’s all my fault. When I was fitting an extra fan to cool the X/Y drivers, I caught the Wi-Fi antenna cable and it came out of the socket.

A bad experience is still an experience.

P.S. But why is the AP6212 Wi-Fi chip on my circuit board crossed out with a thick marker pen? I didn’t do that!

Good catch, notch it down to experience and may help someone else in the future?

Couldn’t say about the marker pen, honestly can’t remember if mine had it when I added the extra fans myself

It’s going to help someone very soon, as I’ll be helping a friend replace a heat bed controller in the very near future and it’s something I’ll note.

Bingo!

Marked it as solved. Glad you found an easy fix .
