What bothers me is that it takes forever to load and doesn’t even automatically connect to my printer… I have to then manually connect.

The worst part is that I can’t figure out what is happening at that time. Looking in the TaskManager, I see nothing that explains the delay. No big CPU increase, no network traffic, no extraordinary disk or GPU activity.

Seems to me that Snorca is just waiting for a network response, maybe checking my user login. That’s not necessary in LAN mode (like over here) but maybe happens anyway.

You’d need to use something more advanced for this, like

- [Process Monitor - Sysinternals | Microsoft Learn](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon)
- [Process Explorer - Sysinternals | Microsoft Learn](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer)

</div>

I know - I also could download the source code from GitHub and check there.

That’s not what I want. My point is, there is no obvious reason for the delay.

I just tried something else: OrcaSlicer also takes some time to start, but that is during the splash screen phase where it says “loading configuration”. And there I see a slight increase in memory consumption. This increase happens also in Snorca, but there is no splash screen. So maybe the “Orca splashscreen delay” is just moved to after the main program of Snorca pops up.

Have you seen how long Cura takes to be “ready for action”? At least with that, you see it loading all the settings in the process.

A tip from another forum:

Changing the homepage significantly speeds up the startup of the Snapmaker Orca

I have to do some more testing with this setting, because I noticed the first time I open SnOrca, it’s very slow, but then if I close it, and reopen it, it’s faster the second time. Perhaps something is being cached?

But I changed the **Default** page to **“Prepare”** instead of **“Home”** , and it **seems MUCH faster** to startup!

But then the first time I go to the Home page, the Home page is is VERY slow to open! So I think this is a big clue! Perhaps the root problem has something to do with the Home page?

For now I’ll do some testing with the Default page set to “Prepare” since when I’m opening SnOrca, I’m usually preparing to work on a .3mf file or open a .stl to slice, and rarely do I look to open any of those models on the “Home” page (I have never opened one yet).

I just tried the suggestion above regarding changing the “Default page” in Preferences (from “Home” to “Prepare”). It does start with the “Prepare” tab instead of “Home”, but the interface is still unresponsive for quite a bit of time until you can actual start using it. You cannot use any of the buttons until whatever happens in the background finishes.

It does speed it up…to an extent. The prepare page opens quickly, but the app still spins in the background and essentially freezes and then still doesn’t connect to the printer…have to do that manually…every…single…time…🤨

@Steaneb That may well be, but then it is because of your OS. here (Mac) it opens and reacts very smooth.

It is a windows 11 machine. Totally not the same experience as mac - yours opens normally, mine stays frozen for a while before you can start using it 🙂

I run Win 10 cuz I hate 11, but that aside it can about 1 minute for Snorca to anything but just sit there the first time you open the program. If you close it and open it again it will get there in less than 15 seconds.

Cura on my Linux machine took 56 seconds from launch to useable. That might not sound like much, but it is when you’re waiting.

I tackled this problem today.
First run hangs, then doesn’t list my printer; close the app and run it again and my printer shows and no hang.

The issue is that on first run, the software loads a trove of files (even on a peformant Win11 build it takes a long time) and while doing so times out the routine for recalling the printer and presents itself as a hang.

**Root cause (localized via Procmon + bisect):** Orca reads the entire `resources\profiles\` folder at startup — 56 vendor folders, ~9000 files, ~57 MB. On a cold filesystem cache (post-reboot), these reads are slow enough that WCP’s internal timeouts fire before initialization completes.

To prove this you can the following.
On a fresh reboot, open a powershell terminal and run this command

`Get-ChildItem -Path “C:\Program Files\snapmaker_orca\resources\profiles” -Recurse -File | ForEach-Object { $null = [System.IO.File]::ReadAllBytes($_.FullName) }`

you will notice a delay before your prompt returns; this is the extensive time required to load the files into memory

Once completed run SnapMaker Orca and it will open fast, not hang, and find your printer.

Solution:

1. preload the files at login - I have a scheduled task that runs at login (I will share the AutoHotKey code later)
2. load the files as a single blob (code change)

If you want to see the trove of files that remain resident after closing Snapmaker Orca, then

1. Open RAMMap (SysInternals; it does take a while to itemize the memory) → **File Summary** tab
2. Sort by Path, look for entries under `C:\Program Files\snapmaker_orca\`
