Print not adhering to build plate

I’ve been having a problem with my prints not adhering to the build plate. No matter what I try, the first layer doesn’t stick when I print something I just sliced. I can still print some things that I sliced a week ago, which are still in the memory, but new things, the first layer is just piling up on the build plate and then getting swept up by the print head as it travels.

Any suggestions? I’ve been through 2 x 1 kg spools of filament before this problem developed.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Romach,

The first thing I would look at is the nozzle distance from the bed, if you want to re-check your offset by re-doing your calibration, that might be a good place to start. When a print starts, you may need to adjust the offset up of down to get the first layer right.

What filament material are you using and is it a different brand from the first 2 spools you used?

I’d also clean the flexible plate off completely with isopropyl alcohol to make sure nothing that has been done to it is effecting the print adhesion.

Good luck!

Hi @romach,
I had some trouble with low adhesion on a print yesterday. I restarted the print several times after noting partial failure in the first layer or two. Previous prints had left some marks in my build plate (probably the nozzle was a tiny bit too low) and I had just raised the nozzle, so I brought it down a little. However, the big improvement came when I manually lowered the print speed using the touch screen. I went to 75% and adhesion was a bit better, but still not perfect. On the next print I started with 50% speed and the first layer was great. I didn’t want to go back to 100% speed too quickly so I added 10% every 30 minutes or so. The final part came out really well (just some fine hairs between some features). This print was done with PLA on the “Normal Quality” mode from Luban. I hope this helps!

Hi @mechan8

Thanks for the tip, I gave it a try, and I think I will be following that advice on some of my trickier prints from now on.

I have solved the initial problem. Upon recommendation of a buddy, I lightly sanded the magnetic mat with 220 grit sandpaper and then washed the whole thing down with isopropyl alcohol. It’s a precious commodity in these perilous times, but I had some for cleaning SLA prints.

I think the print surface was contaminated with something that interfered with the print adhering. That’s a great argument for getting the enclosure, but I couldn’t justify the cost when I bought the printer. I may have to bodge something together.

Thanks for all the tips.

for not sticking to the heated bed issue, the FAQ may help as well https://support.snapmaker.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013696613-What-should-I-do-if-the-first-layer-does-not-stick-to-the-heated-bed-
